Buying a modified GT

Buying a modified car is a risk for sure. I just did it but it checked out/was done properly. Driving a modified car can also be fun, but coming from. Subie… even the V6 would be an upgrade. Life’s short, buy it if you like it and can manage the potential down sides.

lmfao my wife has an 2018 wrx and when i take that to the gym when its too cold ,
and its such a snail and a dog compared to the stang ..

we also have a 2005 outback with 305,000 ,miles ,, (two headgaskets and a tranny later)
thats as slow as the smell of farts lol

like huge difference..
i do expect the car to be up for "parts" soon lol
so maybe i can nab a spare engine block if its not ruined ..

honestly tho ,, i dont see this car lasting , either the power or rain and power will take it out,,
and lack of driving knowledge period..

truth be told ,, when i upgraded my car to the v8,, i had few close calls until i realized what you can and cant do lol

but just keep it in the back of your head to hit me up first when you need to part it out .

Our mechanic inspected the Mustang today. Small valve cover gasket leak. Rear control arm bushings are shot. Rear exhaust tips are falling apart. None of that is a big deal. They suspect that the "new cam" is actually a "ghost cam," although they weren't able to articulate why they suspect that. The previous-previous owner who installed it doesn't have documentation, and we haven't torn open the heads to visually inspect the cam. Other than that, it's in decent shape. I don't see any problems that I can't fix myself, and my son really wants to improve his automechanic skills.

I do appreciate everybody's input.

Although I still believe a better option would eventually present itself, I don't think this is a bad option. I trust my son not to be reckless, and there are probably some lessons for him to learn through this experience. He really wants this car, so we're going to go ahead and buy it this afternoon.

Make sure to post some more photos, the crowd here is very knowledgeable and will help get any issues rectified you come across. I don't think it's a bad option either, especially if it's something you and your son are expecting to put a little sweat equity into.

Ghost cam. When you remove the valve cover to replace the gasket, look closely at the cam. It is easy to identify the stock Ford cams in a 3 valve. They are a hollow shaft with the lobs pressed on. Just look at the base of any lobe where it meets the shaft. If the cam appears to be machined from one piece of steel it is not a stock cam.

Awesome. Thanks. I was wondering if I'd be able to see the cam at that stage of the tear down, and how to visually tell the difference.

We just rebuilt the heads in his Subi in December (broken timing belt), so we're not afraid to get our hands greasy.

You can’t.

The LSA is fixed being a single cam so you cannot tune in the overlap to make it chop.

You could probably just make a crappy tune where it wants to die at idle

On the subject of idle chop using a fixed LSA cam setup (all cam in block & SOHC designs..........) ..........

Here is a video of Billy Godbold giving the cam design criteria necessary to induce idle chop...........it ain't all coming from in-tune idle\fueling control........even w\ GM.......... if impatient, go to 19:12 mins.

Well, there is no such thing as a "ghost cam" for a 3v. Yea, you can retard idle timing to make it idle like crap. The true ghost cam tune actually alters overlap, cant be done with a single cam.
Ghost cams, pops&bangs, flames, whatever, all for "show", and quite possibly the stupidest thing ppl 'tune' into their cars....

Check idle vacuum. Compare to a stock cam, larger the cam the lower the vacuum.

I don't know about the Ford 4.6 3V... maybe Lito can chime in? but many cars are running around with this fake cam... its all over the LS forums. My Brother has modded 2004 Pontiac GTO and it was offered to him when tunning guru Tony Famagio was setting up his car over 15 years ago. Obviously, he declined it, but it's been around a very long time...

FYI I did the same when I had my boosted Audi custom tuned. Tuner asked me you want "Crackle & Pops"? WTF is that a cereal? I personally think its super annoying cars backfiring and run like they are falling apart, but again to each their own...

Ugh the crackle tunes are just as dumb, it's one thing to hear that under hard conditions but when it's popping like that in stop and go traffic you look a bit ridiculous.

Not sure how they'd achieve it on an LS, don't care about Chevy enough to research it either. Lol.
