anyone running extra clutch plates in the stock LSD?

Like the title says....i've been doing a little research and this seems to be something i can do at home in my garage...pulling the rear end apart and replacing and adding extra clutches (i'm assuming the gears don't have to be set up again, not real sure). i really don't want to shell out the money for a truetrac or a locker

I'm not really sure what's going on with the rear of my car, but there's a lot more rubber on the quarter panel on the passenger side then the driver's side (after an evening at the strip)

there also seems to be a lot of weird noises coming from the rear when i'm in the water box doing a burn out....an intermittent buzzing noise (coming from the rear). the car is still leaving straight, but i'm wondering if the stock clutch packs are about to give up the ghost.

any of you guys add extra clutches? what kind of results?

get the FRPP clutch pack kit, it is shimmed to 0.65 and adds an extra plate per side for a higher coefficent of friction.

ive installed plenty of them and have had great results.

ill try to find the part number and post it up. and you do no need to reset your gears but i would look into getting a new set of spider gears since you have the carrier removed. they wear out pretty fast if drag racing alot. you get side deflection and wear.

I do it to all of my cars and customers when they wear out. Ive always used the standard clutch pack kit from Ford Racing not the Carbon Fiber one. I stack em clutch,steel,clutch,steel,clutch,steel,clutch,shim. I usually try to run the thickest shim as possible. It usually comes out to .025-.035 on each side. Make sure you soak the new clutches in friction modifier for atleast 30 minutes before installing them too.

While your in there I feel as though its a good idea to debur and polish any jagged edges and casting flash off the carrier.

okay, thanks for the input. i guess doing it in my garage is a no go then since the gears will have to be reinstalled again. it does seem like an alternative to going with a truetrac or locker though

i'll have to check with one of the local shops and see what they'll charge me for this

I've done this in the garage many times. It's not a real big deal. As I have heard, "don't fear the gear," so don't fear the rear, it's not difficult. I wouldn't call it an alternative, I would say that it requires maintenance. I have only grenaded a trac-loc, once. It was my fault, because the spiders were already shot and I knew it. I wound up with a transparent diff cover and an unexpected oil change. The trac-loc will hold up, as long as it is tight. Setting up a gear requires basic tools and knowledge, you can definitely do this. There are many write ups, some of the best are on the explorer forums. Believe it or not, there was a write up way back in 1999 that gave me the courage to start building transmissions.

You can do it yourself the gears dont have to be reset, as long as you put the same shims back were you got them on the carrier. I have dont a bunch of them you are not changing anything about the contact of the gears doing it.

okay, maybe this is doable after all. i really don't want to drop $450 on a truetrac and the installtion costs also. if i can do this my self for less than $200...i may give this a try

You won't have to set the gear up, since you are only removing the differential and the pinion will be untouched. You also won't have to remove the ring gear from the differential. Just mark your shims left/right or driver side/passenger side.

I will be honest, I am still on the fence as to which is better, the new M-4700-C offerings or the older ones. I never had many issues with the old M-4700-B design. They both seem to work the same neither better than the other when fresh.

okay, thanks. i'm still tossing around the idea of installing a truetrac also

here's a question...if i get my lsd taken apart and find it has carbon clutches...instead of buying two sets of clutches just to get the two extra clutch plates....assuming a couple of the existing clutches are good...can carbon and regular clutch plates be mixed?

i assume it would be okay since there would be a steel plate between each of them?

if i go this route then the best thing to do would be to pull the diff apart and see what kind of clutches are in there and then purchase some new ones to match....hey, i really appreciate your help in all this...

Care to expand on why, exactly?

Not that I know any better, but I was under the impression that the carbon ones work like the stockers, just last longer. I don't have any evidence to back that up, I'm just asking because I need to make a decision on which ones I'm going with too.

I don't feel they last as long or hold up as well as the regular ones. As far as their ability to out perform one another in the short run, I have seen no advantage. That was the reason behind the "on the fence" comment.

I am, and ever since my diff is probably the truest part of my setup, no slip, no lock up when not wanted, great lockup on burnouts. The guy that's building my tranny has a tru trac in his, and I told him I had the same, he drove my car and truly believed me, then I told him it was just completely rebuilt and added clutches

i had the same thing going on with my car, and i was worried until i noticed all the PR honda guys doing insane(nascar spin out amounts of smoke) one wheel peels(passenger side tire doing the burnout), you can be picking up alot of other rubber from other cars.
