Very sweet!! Will be following this closely. Too bad your in Texas cause when it comes time for me to do a built trans down the road I am seriously considering the 4R and want to see it in action first. Keep up the good work!

So its like 3/4 done. I hate it when I get stuff buttoned up and find out I messed something up. Over all though it is looking pretty sweet like it was suppose to be built that way.

Thanks for the continued support guys! I didn't get up until 11am, I never sleep that late but we have been up into the early morning a few days in a row. I have been taking it slow and the trans is almost ready to come back out. I will, most likely, get it torn down this afternoon.

I'm all hopped out... I'm taking a break right now because of the heat, it's gotta be close to 100deg.

Tanner , do you have any part numbers handy for the following items ?

1. Trans yoke
2. Rear yoke
3. u joints
4. Bellhousing bolts

Also is the 1350 joints the best or are there other options ?

Thanks , Billy

If you guys go back to this post http://www.s197forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=602579#post602579 and read toward the bottom of page 2, you can see the pics and commentary of what it took to wrap this up.

Also, moved to tech.

Can't wait to see it done! Welcome to the world of auto shifted 4r70w s197's!:boobies:

I didn't want to spend the additional $200 on a 1350 front slip yoke that I didn't need right now. I had the driveshaft made with 1350 joints and rear flanged yoke, so I could upgrade it at a later date without buying a new shaft. I will get the exact part numbers for you later on, the car is not here right now. I did have the box for the yoke and the link for the flange and rear yoke.

1. Trans yoke - 1330 OEM Ford yoke - F8AZ-4841-AA (has built in dampner)
2. Rear yoke - 1350 Neapco flanged yoke, with SN95 companion flange (94-04 Mustang GT)
http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p37...oke_fits_ford_8.8_inch_rear_ends_large_b.html
3. u joints - front 1330 to 1350 conversion joint and rear 1350 joint (Neapco conversion joint and spicer rear)
4. Bellhousing bolts - The stock bell bolts worked, so I don't know what happened there.. I believe Josh may have grabbed one of the wrong ones at first.

Puss!

Thanks Billy! I will get the other part numbers as soon as I get back over to Josh's. We are going to tear the trans down on Thursday, I think we needed a break from all this.

BTW: There are a few slip yokes on eBay and the first one is actually where I bought mine.

I have decided to bump the teardown up a day and do it tonight. That way, I will be able to Next Day Air any unexpected items.

I made a tool to resize the solid teflon, direct rings but this time I bought a tried and true tool. I will have pictures when it arrives. I also bought new gaskets, other sealing rings and a few other parts that may need replacing. The big job here is the rear case bushing. I will have to bore the case end and install the bushing. This combined with properly installed direct seals, should solve all of my problems. I will also inspect all of the other components (pump, drums, bands..) for anything abnormal. One last thing I plan to change, is the forward clutch (1st gear) apply. I felt that it was almost too firm and this is just a static clutch, not a dynamic one; all it has to do is hold. Photos of teardown to follow, you will get some good information in the next couple of days, stay tuned...

Oh, if anyone's wondering, this teardown will cost almost another $250 once I buy more fluid (filter already purchased), trans fluid has gotten expensive.

Ok, well we broke it down (45min worth of work) and found that the direct seals, while showing a few small scratches, were fine. However, I did put the wrong VB gasket in the damn thing, frickin' stupid mistake. I am still going to machine and bush the rear case, seal area for piece of mind.

Trans ready for open heart..

Valve body and related crap, out.

Pump removed, exposing intermediate (2nd gear) clutch pack.

Intermediate clutches and reverse drum.

Whole stack removed to bare case.

Photo of direct drum/clutch pack, forward hub, stub shaft, O/D band, sun shell and output shaft/ring gear. If you look in the ring gear (part next to the case - far right) you will see the small shaft with the orange, direct seals. These were the ones I was worried about.. I'm replacing them anyway.

Upon close inspection, I noticed a blue stripe on the valve body gasket, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!! I installed the wrong damn gasket in the valve body?!

It should have been white (my 4R70w is a 1999 model) and I knew that as soon as I saw it! Damn it.. I don't know if this is the problem as I have never made this mistake before but I am going to research the VB hydraulic circuit diagram and make a determination. I know it is not right, I just have to be sure this is the exact (only) problem and there is not a failed shift solenoid, leaking rear seals or some other issue making this a two part problem. If the gasket is it, I am going to be both angry and ecstatic..

All for now, be back tomorrow. :hi:
