I wouldnt be "dealing" with it for 5500 miles. I would be making it break even more during those 5500 miles and figuring out a way to replicate it. Yea, if you take it in there with an intermittent problem they are going to push you off to the wayside. That is just the nature of the beast when it comes to troubleshooting. If they cannot replicate it, they let it go.
They were 5500 very rigorous (after warmed up) miles.

I tried to find a "pattern" to replicate it but nothing worked- it was purely random, usually right after I decided it wasn't going to happen again.

I'll very likely use a different dealer in the future. I really liked the no-BS attitude the sales crew gave me during the sale, but their service could use some work. Lots of smoke and mirrors.

I mean, sometimes my car has a notchy feel going into second but i know without a doubt its the notchy transmission. Have you had any other mustangs before this? This transmission is definitely comparable to a t45 and 3650 in my opinion...

Outright grinding is definitely worth having them check it out. Did you ever try a different dealer? Some dealers don't even want to try things like that as they depend on the manufacturer to pay for the labor and parts.

Fortunately, my dealer is very helpful. I had two little tears on my GT500 tape stripes when I got it home. I took it back in and showed them. No one had even noticed them except me. They immediately called up and ordered the parts, scheduled an appointment to have the striped replaced, and offered a loaner car as well. I think you maybe just got a bum dealer.
These guys were quick to repair obvious issues (passenger side mirror fell out of the housing five weeks after purchase) but things like the gear whine (which I can get over) and transmission grinds have gone untouched. I've had a rental each time but it's still a lot of lost work time dropping it off and such.

Speaking of which, the 2010 coupe rental car has me wanting to go back to a stock suspension. It's smooooth. Time to get the stock springs and arms out of the attic.

My first Mustang here. I did build a GT40P powered 1989 Crown Victoria station wagon, though, behind which I was running a WC T5. Even the T5 with a 16" shifter was smoother on the 1-2 than this.

I can deal with a notchy shifter and count it as part of the package, like a very slight lope at idle, but when I could hear the brief scratch of gears as they slid together which turned into massive grinding... that's not something I'm willing to get past.

I have a bad feeling they're going to not do the job all the way (leave in potentially faulty clutch) or something and the issue will be back... but in all honesty, I have faith that the tech on the job knows what he's doing and if Ford will let him replace the other stuff he'll do the job right the first time.

Well, i know from experience if it keeps breaking they will keep fixing it. My dad is a prime example of this. His 2007 SuperDuty had 3 transmissions put in under warranty. The third one, Ford had a special team flown from the place where they make superdutys i suppose, and they took apart the third new transmission, and replaced everything inside and i guess made it stronger. I know a good deal about cars, but transmissions are something i know nothing about so i cannot tell you what exactly they did. But, from the service writeup they replaced his whole transmission, everything to do with the drivetrain, and upgraded transmission components.

I guess in a nutshell, ford will do you right. You just have to give it some time. Although we had that trouble at of that one superduty, he still went out and got the 2011 superduty when it came out and stuck with ford.

I'll stick with Ford, too, partially for the product, partially for their business structure. This just pisses me off but I'm a big boy and will get over it once things are right again. Worst case I'll go back to trucks.

The new transmission grinds into fourth and whines in every gear.

I really wish you lived closer so i could experience this. My transmission is notchy going into every gear, but i've driven a mustang for the better part of my legal driving life so it is normal to me. I just wonder if you are getting notchy mixed with grinding. I'm not trying to talk trash on you, i'm just thinking out loud.

No. I've driven notchy (my Kenworth at work) and I've driven grinding (my Explorer with blown synchros.)

I can feel what everyone else calls notchy as I shift from gear to gear, even at a stop. I can intermittently both feel and hear what I call grinding as I'm casually shifting into fourth gear (it was previously second and third.) I find that if I clutch, pull it out of third, hold my breath, wait for the RPMs to drop to idle, then pray as I shift... this transmission still sucks. :D

Hmmm ok, so the grinding you are experiencing is like if you let out on the clutch before the transmission is actually in gear. That sort of grinding? I'm not taking away from you, but i could see how an inexperienced driver could think the transmission is grinding and not realizing it is the notchy feel.

Inexperiened perhaps, but I've been driving manuals every day for ten years, including professionally logging over a thousand a week for the last two.

At this point I'm tempted to set up some sort of in-car camera so I can record the sequence of shifts and sounds of the grinding. Just so the dealer can't put me off again this time, once again saying they couldn't replicate it.

Anyone local to you with another 2011 6 speed manual car you could drive or they could drive yours maybe to see if there is a differene in their trans?
