Cylinder 8 was losing 11%, 4 was losing 4%. This is the plug from #8...

(Ted's talking, I'm typing...)

This is the MMR block w/about 6k miles on it. Plugs are 6 months old, injectors are less than a year, about 25 - 30 1/4 mile passes. Any guesses before we rip it apart? With this amount of leakage, is it safe to drive the car around town/freeway? Does this thing really have to be torn down again? How do I fix it? Can it be tune related? Why would #8 go lean and not the others? Am I really fucked?

[/Ted]
Ok...is it leaking 11% on one hole only? Was the engine warm or cold?

Only 11% when warm. Run a compression check on the engine then do a pressure test on the cooling system.

Thanks for the info stud.. will try that soon

As of today Went for a ride and tried to start the car and again it crancked over but didnt fire up. Again I had to step the gas peddle all the way down then it fired up and bam the puff of white smoke that smells like un-burnt gas! While driving I got a p0353 and cleared it and 30 min later I got that AND a p0352. It looks like the idea of me driving around nicely for a while is out the door. Once I get these other tests done I have to find someone to do the work.. or I "might" try tearing this shit apart again =-/. Shit

Man that sucks. IMHO I'd probably tear it apart and fix it or get it fixed before you keep driving it.

If he has a garage I don't think they can say anything about it as long as he is in the garage.

Ignition coil codes? Would they trip if there is trouble firing those two cylinders? First, the car doesn't want to start. Then you get bypass that smells like unburned fuel. Next you get coil codes. I'm wondering if you've got a headgasket problem or an ignition problem.

I don't know man. This has been a strange 6 months. I can't be sure what's going on. I have an appointment to get the test your talking about. I will post results. So let me get all this stright. A leak Down test will just see % of leakage into crank case? Compression test is something test with the cylinders? And this pressure test on the cooling stsem is only to test for the head gasket and other seals? I do want to be fair if it's not a tune issue and thts why I'm paying 100's to make sure what's going on. If the head gasket is leaking. Would that be the fault of the gasket alone ? Or can a hot tune cause gasket failures? If my gasket was bad could I have raced as much as I did without blowing the thing up long ago?

Leakdown will show you the amount of leakage past the rings and valves. Did they test all eight cylinders or just the two mentioned above? If they did, do you have those readings? A high percentage reading in one cylinder versus a low reading in the others will show you where the problem may be. Eleven percent on a street driven engine is really not bad unless it is just that hole.

Compression test will show you the cranking pressure created in each cylinder. Similar to the leakdown, a low reading in one cylinder versus a higher reading in the others will show you which is the problem cylinder.

Cooling system test will help determine if there is a blown headgasket. If you have excessive leakage on this test then it is a good bet that one of the headgaskets is toast. If not, then you know you're ok there.

It is much easier to do these tests than it is to tear one of these engines apart. At the very least you'll know what you're looking at. I'm just curious as to why you're getting coil trouble codes. Unless the computer will fire off a trouble code if that particular plug is having trouble lighting. Did the shop put new plugs back into the engine after the leakdown test?

just got a call. The head gasket is good and passed the test. They told me they couldn't do the compression test because they could not find the right tool. Probable the reason the other shop didn't do it yet charged me for it(ass holes). Anyway, we know the engine was good after install with leak down numbers and now that there is no head gasket issue. Does that now leave only the tune? Can I be mad and point fingers now? :)

Remember the bad thing about pointing a finger at someone. There's three more fingers pointing back at you.

So....now we're back to these coil codes. Do you still have the stock coils? I'd have to check the cylinders shown on the codes to see what those plugs looked like. Only other things would be fuel quality/delivery and the tuning. You've got the dual GT pumps so they should be alright. Where have you been buying fuel? You didn't use any additives either did you?

You did put new plugs in after removing and posting pictures of the f**ked ones right? You didn't have codes before pulling plugs etc... so go over what you did make sure coils are plugged back in correctly, etc....
