I pulled the 3.25" pulley and put a 3.5" on to play it safe. I really don't feel like pulling the motor out of this car

I was running the 3.25 Gen II with up to 12.5 lbs. boost with stock exhaust. Put on Kooks, O/R X, FFRP TB, and switched to an 8 rib and Reichard Racing 3.45 pulley. Running about 11.9 lbs. boost now.

Im running a 3.625 on a Gen II and hoping for no more than a steady 8-9psi and maybe a peak of 10 with my longtubes and offroad h-pipe. The last thing I need is a blown bottom end. My car won't see over 6k rpms until it's built.

With totally stock exhaust, heads, cams...

3.875" 8 psi
3.625 9.9 psi
3.375 11-12

My experience has been the pulleys provide more than the advertised boost on a stock engine/exhaust.

I typically run the 3.625", 3.875" for autocross or track, and 3.375 for drag racing.

I was told by my tuner to expect to lose 1-2 psi with my long tubes and cams

I suppose you have the Whipple tune that can adjust for the different pulleys. Or do you diff tunes for diff pulleys in an Xcal3 or Diablo?

My tuner said that if I changed to one size smaller pulley I wouldn't actually need a totally new dyno tune... I trust him but it sounded a bit odd. I guess the computer is smart enough to make the adjustments...

All done on the same tune.

You would need a new tune if the new pulley maxed out the current fuel system or MAF. Otherwise you can change pulleys all day long.

With you get a engine tuned, it doesn't mean it's tuned just for that exact set of conditions under which it was tuned.

Tuning is really just filling in the PCM's decision making tables with the right information. The PCM finds the right spot in the table based on the information provided to it through the sensors connected to it.

Changing pulleys isn't any different than changing the throttle opening via your foot, it just means a change in airflow; provided the MAF has the ability to see that increased airflow, and the fuel system has enough capacity to respond and create the desired AFR, the engine will be happy.
