yes... remove the console top...there are 4 snap lock areas on the shifter top, you can push on them to release the top. once you have the top loose, locate the white wire on the passenger side of the shifter. there is a small tab holding the connectors together. once you have that loose there is a small torx on the front of the shifter handle, remove the torx, the gently tap the shifter handle upward to remove it.

Hey, has anyone successfully removed the overdrive button from an 05 to 09 Mustang GT shifter without breaking it? Need to know how. Thanks.

Can I just ask why you want to remove the button from the handle? Curious.

I'm working with a variation of the White Madness ball shifter. If it works, it will look more like a standard shifter, but work as the normal shifter but without overdrive. I still want to use my overdrive button though, so will have to do something separately.

Hey,
Thanks for asking.
I connected it to a separate
12mm DC Power Button 5V LED, Waterproof Latching Push Button Switch On/Off 23V (Red 2V).
I dropped it into the console to the right of the shifter.
I set it for the LED to be on when overdrive is off.
I hope this helps.

hi, I’m actually in the process of doing something very similar. If you could go over some of my questions, that would be much appreciated.
1. Did you wire up this button to the O/D wire female connector that was already inside the shifter?
2. If so, would you show me where you bought the male connector?
3. Are you able to show us the finished product of where you end up putting the button?
Thanks you very much in advance!

When I moved my OD button I just cut the two wires and then ran them through a momentary switch/button. I think I used some old speaker wire to run it into my handle. I don't have the same type of set up but the wiring is just adding a switch/button to the circuit. I moved my button from the shifter display (tci unit) to the handle (B&M). Below you can see the button on the handle and the wire coming out the boot.

I’m wanting to add a shifter ball instead of the OEM automatic T shifter on my 05 4.6L GT and wondering where I can get a shifter knob with the button for shifting gears? For the O/D button I will move it next to the shifter bezel somewhere. I asked Nifty Shifters since they can color match but they can’t create one for my 05. Any help is appreciated

Not really possible with the stock plastic auto shifter. Only option I know of that works (and I have) is from TCI. I ended up modifying mine to change the threading and such.
B&M supposedly had one but I don't think it ever made it out of concept stages.
I've heard anything with a similar shift pattern for the PRNDL works, but I don't have anything to test against.
FYI, overdrive button is a momentary. Just blips a signal out, it isn't constantly sending on or off.

So when you say you want a button to shift gears are you referring to like paddle shifting gears? Or do we want one just for the O/D button?

There are a lot of shifter balls with buttons.

I don't know what fits the stock shifter as I have a TCI shifter and the handle/ball can be any universal one with the proper threads. I used a B&M T-handle shifter with the button on the side for the O/D.

Stock shifter is a plastic mess with no easy way of converting it. There's no rod or anything, the T-handle is all molded into the lever assembly, etc. Your option if you want to change the "knob" is to get a different shifter. Only one out there that was a solution was the TCI ratchet shifter, which they don't sell anymore (they do for the 6R80, but not the 5R55S). Can probably find one on eBay.
Someone else had experimented with producing a paddle shifter kit, but that died a long time ago. There's solutions out there from PA and such, but you have to switch to their transmission computer/etc.

There's no easy way to remove the button and relocate it to somewhere else. You can bypass it by simply disconnecting the wires, and wire in another momentary switch for elsewhere. Tons of options there (basically any 12v momentary switch will work). That's only going to enable/disable 5th gear.

If in D, you can electronically control the change of gears by sending signals to the PCM, at least according to the diagrams, but I've never heard of anyone successfully doing that. Would need a bunch of logic wired in around it since you'd be overriding the computer's job.

I'm not aware of anyone who sells an aftermarket PRNDL for the 5R55S gating. B&M may have something, but I've never seen or heard of anyone running a unit for the 5R55S. Usually if someone has one of those racing aftermarket shifters in, they've changed transmissions to a 3/4 speed.

If you want to race with it, you kinda only need to get to 1st and maybe 2nd, for staging and such. Otherwise drive is going to function well enough on its own. Learn to command downshifts and such through the peddle and you'll get what you need.

How did you get this shifter to work on the mustang shifter mechanism? Does it fit on it. And do you pull up on the one you installed to shift into gears ?
