Because Race Car!

Looks nice Brian. I have my 17x7 Racestars already but my 15x8s are on backorder for another 3 weeks or so. Race season starts in 3 weeks! Eek! Hopefully I get them on time for opening day.

Here's mine this morning on the hoist just before disassembly for Circle D and gear install, along with my friend Kyle's blue 2012 that just got longtubes installed and my mechanic friend Tim's almost-brand-new white 2014 GT.

Wow, Kris, you're cutting it close getting those 15x8's !!! Converter & gears, FTW, though! Can't wait to see how your car responds to the mods. Love seeing all the 5.0's together. Here's a pic of me and a few friends at Bremerton Raceway last season after a day of racing in our '13 & '14 GT's. Chris' Grabber Blue Track Pack GT, Dante's Gotta Have it Green Glass Roof Brembo GT, John's black GT, and my Ruby Red Glass Roof GT....

OK, plans didn't quite go the way they were supposed to, and I have a decision to make.

The used set of 3.27 gears I bought are junk. I can either go with a set of known-good used 3.15 gears that we have lying around (original gears from my old car), or find another set of 3.27/3.31 gears.

So, with 27.2" (advertised) tires (255/60-15 M/T), a Circle D 5C, and a stock intake manifold, would you go with 3.15s or a 3.27/3.31 set? Guessing the car will trap in the 116-117 range on a decent-DA day, maybe 118 if super good. I ran 3.31s with these tires on my old car but that was with a Boss manifold, trapping 118-119, at around 7400-7500rpm.

It works out to be a difference of trapping at around 6900-7000 in 3rd with 3.15s or 7200-7300 with a 3.27 gear.

Yeah, I'm looking at a couple datalogs from my old car last year, one with 3.15 gears and one with 3.31s. With the 3.15s, 117mph was around 7100 rpm, and with the 3.31s it was closer to 7500. I definitely now think the 3.15s would be better with these tires since the power falls off so much over 6600 with the stock manifold.

Update from yesterday's racing.

Only change from last season is the swap from heavy factory 18x8 wheels (with M&H Racemasters on the rear) to SVE Drag Wheels (17x4.5 up front and 15x10 out back with M/T ET Streets). I stayed with a 28" tall drag radials. This change resulted in a drop of 68 lbs compared to my street setup.

Only got a few passes since I chose to run in the Test N Tune class instead of competing in the points brackets. The track decided that I have to run in the Pro bracket this year since I'm consistently & deeply in the 11's now. I've always run in Sportsman before, so I'm up against a much faster group of cars now (as you'll see in my timeslips below).

Last season's best was an 11.76. Yesterday's worst was an 11.65, with an 11.62 and a new personal best of 11.57 @ 117.55. Needless to say, the lighter wheels and tires worked very well. Taking nearly 2 tenths off my ET's. DA was about 200-300' below sea level, but I did the correction vs sea level and it was so close that it was a wash.

As always, I'm car # 2061 on the slips below and I ended up in the right lane each pass since I am the "slower car" and the return road exits to the left at Bremerton Raceway....

Brian,

And a Happy Easter to you and your family buddy.

You are for sure one of the people I have met on the internet that really enjoys his Mustang.

It's nice to see there are some guys that do enjoy their Mustangs in their own manner.

Take Care,
Terry

Thanks, all. I'm crossing the traps around 7K rpm's and if I stay in the throttle past the traps it'll upshift to 5th about 100 ft after the stripe. My shiftpoints are in the 7300-7500 rpm range, depending on gear. If I add any power (and subsequently mph through the traps), the 4.10's will have to get swapped for 3.90's to prevent getting into 5th gear.

Brian, got my tune from mike in lil over a hour this afternoon now just waiting to upload to car, I have a very similar set up to yours but have a base model with front sway bar removed, and adj. upper control arm- was wondering what tire pressure you were running your last outing. just trying to get a starting point- I understand every track surface is different - I also have the sve 15x10's with a mt 275 dr.. thanks for the R & D work.

I used to run 25 psi successfully with M&H Racemasters, so that's where I started with the M/T's. Spun too much and aired downed to 20 psi which worked awesome. Dead hooked and 60 foots in the 1.61 to 1.63 range. Definitely pays to experiment.
