I just picked up a new 2011 GT in the dark grey metallic. Does any one else think that the new paint job is crappy? I has a tone of orange peel in it. My 09 GMC pickup in almost the same color, has a lot more shine. Is there enough paint on these cars to color sand and buff?

I dont think they will get a chance to fuck up my new ride. If I need to, I will strip it down and clear it. I would like to get away with sanding and buffing.

Your choice. If I just spent 25-30k on a new car, I'd expect the paint to be perfect. If not, they better fix it.

I reckon! I'd expect some orange peel, even luxury cars have it but if it's a shit paintjob and not glassy smooth to the touch then I'd be taking it back...

On a new ride the paint should be pretty damn good, I wouldnt touch it ,if you think it is that bad I would def take back and see what can be done at the dealership.
I would be afraid of cutting through the clear coat even with 2000 grit and finer.

My MD associate has a BMW3M 330CI and it's got orange peel ALL OVER it. The doors wont even throw a smooth reflection. I was amazed and he bought it brand new and paid serious money for this car.

I've notice a bit of orange peel on some of the new cars. You would think they figured out how to get smooth by now. You could wet sand and buff but you better know what your doing or you'll be thru the clear before you can say oh shit. A trick to wet sanding is to tape the edges so as not to sand thru. Then theres the issue of swirls from buffing, which in my opinion would worse than the orange peel. If you took it to the dealer I bet they would buff it and call it done.

I stopped by the Ford place this morning, the paint on some of the Mustangs was better than mine and some was the same. The dark grey that I have seems to be the worst.
I grew up in a body shop (I do not do it for a living any more), so I think the best thing for this car is to tape off all the edges and get with the program. I will only color sand the flat surfaces and then buff the whole thing. Worst case it needed to be cleared again any way. The ford dealers body shop sucks so they are not going to get a shot at it. I could get better paint at MACCO.

I've noticed many newer cars have much worse orange peel than cars from 10 years ago. I was toldit was due to environental regulatiosn on pain content used in mass production.

This makes sense considering a bunch of ******* care about emissions and your only allowed so many vocs from paint and paint products. And it's not just mass produced it's everything.

All newer cars have pretty shitty paint jobs. I think part of it is the quality of the products being sprayed on them, and the quality of the way the paint is sprayed. The quicker they get it done the more money they can make. It sucks the cars quality has to suffer.

I agree. I have now had a 2010 GT and a 2011 GT both black in color. The paint on both of them pretty much sucks. There are spots on the 2011 where the paint looks super thin and the clear coat is spotty and pitted. Really is a shame you pay $30 grand for a car and get shitty paint. I have worked on the paint on the new car for a couple of days now using the New Finish scratch remover and polish and it is looking better.

I think you'll be fine wet sanding as long as you go slow, are you using 2000 grit? Others have wet sanded/buffed brand new cars before and have had great results. Good Luck.

I was at car meet yesterday and one guy had a 2011 5.0. He previously had an 2010 Camaro SS and he said the build quality and paint of his camaro was better than the mustang.

I agree 100%! The paint quality on mine is very dull. Its like they forgot to spray enough clear on. Thank God its silver because if it was Kona bluck of Black I would be really upset.

I've heard that new cars actually have that effect to prevent scratches and the paint last longer.

My buddys Grabber '11 actually has really nice paint. I work at a dealership and I've been surprised as well at the lack of quality on some of the paint jobs coming from Ford (and every other manufacturer honestly). The superdutys and F150's seem to be the worst.

A couple years ago my other buddy got Ford to pay for a light cut and buff on his Mach 1 because of orange peel. It turned out killer.
