Anyone have tips on tuning the 5r55s?
I use HPTuners but that shouldn’t matter I’m just curious what people are doing.
I know everyone just buys can tunes but hopefully someone will have this knowledge so I don’t have to experiment too much.

JDM Engineering has quite a bit of experience tuning those. My 2010 Roush has a JDM tune with their shift points and I've been pretty happy with it.

Can I ask what your intentions with it are, street, drag racing, or track days? Reason I ask is the 5r55 when pushed hard will overheat and blow fluid into the bell housing and then all over the bottom of your car. I do track days and have done several mods to mine with not much for results so if I can save you some headaches feel free to ask?

My 07 GT has a 5R55S auto Trans and it came with a SCT 91 octane tune. I haven't had any problem out of it so you may want to see if they can help. I'm not very knowledgeable about tunes so I'm not sure how to tell if the tuner that came with my car is married or unmarried or what that even means. Likewise I need to know if I do other mods if those have to be included in a new tune or if the one i have learns them.

I pretty much use manual shifting with my TCI shifter as it is very hard to dial it in perfect. One day when I have HP tuners I will play around with it. I have mine set pretty much by RPM or vehicle speed vs engine load. Not sure how to do it using the tables in the software but basically mine shifts at light to medium throttle every 15 mph. Maybe 1st gear is slightly lower but my shift points goes as follows:

1st to 2nd @ 15 mph
2nd to 3rd @ 30 mph
3rd to 4th @ 45 mph
and into 4th at 60 mph
Overdrive is manually activated at about 70 mph.

Obviously as more throttle is given the higher the shift point till it gets up to redline at WOT.

I didn't do the tuning myself and it took many revisions and trial and error to get it to where it is now and it's still not perfect but its' close enough where I'm happy. Like I said I tend to shift manually more often than not.

Fluid fill rate modification will help the trans live.

get a trick flow plan with drain plug and the JDM overflow can. I raced a 5r55s on a whipple2.3l . Made it live doing my own tuning to the trans

I have added a Performance Automatic larger pan with dipstick, JDM Overflow Catch Can, and a B&M Racing 20,500 btu Trans cooler. I run HPDE track days and will overheat my trans. Usually get 2-3 25 minute sessions before it will overheat, and at that point it will shift itself into overdrive, even though it's turned off. I contacted Monster Transmission about it and they claim I've done about all I can with it and even if I rebuilt it I'd probably have the same issue down the road. They recommended upgrading to the 6 speed but that is way more than I want to go thru. I have now 60,000 miles and about 25 track days and surprisingly it's still hanging in there.

Drag racing is a different story, does not build up heat as much as it is only doing a 1/8-1/4 mile at a time with time to cool down between runs. I've done a couple BIR Wednesday night drags with seven 1/4 mile runs per night and never had a problem with it overheating there.
