$800 for gears!?

Am I crazy or is that about $300 too expensive for gears and install? I'm looking to have 4.10s put in my car and calling a reputable local shop, I was quoted $800 out the door. The entire install kit including bearings, shims, fluids, gears, and all the other stuff is $245 from AM. That leaves $550 for install? I'm sure they can get the parts cheaper than I can too.

Surely that can't be right. I'm sure it's been discussed many times before, but only came up with one other thread where he was quoted even more than I was.

Anyone in Central Texas know where I can get gears installed for a better price or at least get a reach around for how much I'm paying?

If your keeping your diff yea that's way high. Here in tulsa the best place is Lester's and they charge 200. Couple that with 170 for Richmond 4.10s, 140 for the Richmond mega deluxe install kit and your just a bit over 500.

If I can't find anywhere local, I'll probably give them a call. I'd have a 2 hour drive down there then have to either wait around or go back another day though.

It takes them roughly 3 hours to do it. They wont mind you waiting around. When ive had gears done i make an appt, usually a saturday morning. Get there around 9 and leave by 12. Trust me when i say this, you wont find anywhere cheaper.

$450ish is a fair price. Biggest thing is how good they are, there's nothing worse than someone botching the job and ending up with gear whine

Go with word of mouth for gears. It's worth a few hundred more for a proper install imo.

I usually pay around $400-$450 in labor. I also don't cheap out on the gears. Get Ford gears and make sure the shop knows how to install them. Swapping shims doesn't always work and once you have noisy gears it doesn't go away. The $200 labor guy probably isn't going to test drive your car and redo the install if it's noisy.

+1 on this! By far the best Customer Friendly shop! and the would never over charge on anything!

$800 for everything is on the high end of normal. I might pay that if they were the best shop in town and it was all FRPP parts. IMO $600-700 would be a better target.

750-800 is honestly a fair deal in the world of most shops. Most techs cannot also do things like properly set gear lash, so usually there is "rear-end " guy, or you use a tranny guy that can do standard transmissions. 800 for parts and labor, both provided by a shop with an average labor rate hanging out somewhere around 90 an hour that is going to mark up the gears as well is not really high.
Most shops will not warranty parts the customer brings in. Most of us are just jaded car guys, so 800 out the door is more then we would pay, but to the guy that just isn't capable of doing it himself 800 isn't bad for parts, labor and a labor warranty.
