$800 for gears!?

Heres a breakdown of my gear install I just last weekend:

Ford Racing 4.10 Gears-126 through Tasca Ford
Install-155
fluids, shims, and seals- 45

My installer said the factory bearings were in good shape, so I reused the factory bearings. This guy is cheap since he works out of his house, but the guy is very well known in South Texas. He did my 4.56 gear install on my 4wd Sierra, took him a couple of days since he doesn't have a lift. But those gears were quiet as factory.

He even let me hang around and showed me the whole install process.

If your keeping your diff yea that's way high. Here in tulsa the best place is Lester's and they charge 200. Couple that with 170 for Richmond 4.10s, 140 for the Richmond mega deluxe install kit and your just a bit over 500.

It is only high if they don't have specific item prices. If they follow Mitchell or Alldata for Labor then depending on the labor rate they charge it is not too far off. Either one call fro approximately 5 hours including all bearing replacement. Most shops are generally around 100 per hour

That is about what most shops charge. There are some shops that do however go by book time and the estimate will be higher! Not saying it is right.

For awhile they were selling 3.73 Motive gears. Those are the ones that got the bad rep for noise. They needed to be set up tight and unless a shop knew what they were doing or even bothered to know there was a difference then they came out noisy and were labled as junk.

I'm fairly certain that frpp is now selling only Ford made gears.

Bruce according to the ford parts dept here they still sell both. The feal frpp gears are known as A gears. Maybe they could have leftovers, who knows.

I'm going by the FRPP web site. It's been a few years since they blew the other gears out and went to all Sterling Axle gears.

It takes them roughly 3 hours to do it. They wont mind you waiting around. When ive had gears done i make an appt, usually a saturday morning. Get there around 9 and leave by 12. Trust me when i say this, you wont find anywhere cheaper.

Im not a master mechanic by any means but with the power of the internet I seem to be able to tackle most things. I searched the internet and found a complete write up on how to install gears printed it out and went to town on em. Took a little longer then most probably but wasnt nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It is messy and the smell is hard to get rid of but theres no whining or anything of that nature. You might give it a shot might be easier then you think

Using Ford gears in a gear swap almost always works with the same shims. Where a shop earns their money is making sure aftermarket or Ford, the gears are lashed correctly. If you had noise would there do it again until it was quiet and correct?

Keep in mind, to do it right, installing everything within specs, can take longer than a few hours or if you run into other issues. Those who slap'em in cheap are probably not taking much extra time to check things

I can point you to a local club member who can attest to such experiences and how I took care of the resulting mess and problems.

Called STP, I don't know who I spoke with as I didn't get a name but they quoted $450 for everything (weird- their site says $399.98)

Also called Allies, Dan. He told me to order everything myself and the labor is about $350.

Hope to hear back from Mike soon, but I know he's pretty much nocturnal!

You can install them yourself, its not that bad as long as you have a press or know someone that can do your bearings for you. just my opinion

Its really not that bad, if you know someone who has done it before that can help watch over what your doing. Just take your time. I think it took me around 2.5 hours to change mine, but I have done 10-15 gear changes.
