Aftermath

Finally took the motor apart and as suspected, spun bearing. Damn thing got so hot that it melted the bearing and discolored the cap. All the chunks on the table came from the pick-up tube. Some nice chunks in the oil pan as well. An interesting thing we noticed was the contact the piston made on the head, you can see the markings. Thankfully the head is O.K.

Another interesting thing we noticed is the Livernois block does not have studs for the windage tray. Guess they concluded it's not really necessary, although I sent them an email about it. Anyway, on with the pics....

Block

Is this the first Livernios short block to fail? What was the cause (I don't recall your post), did you loose oil pressure? Sorry for your loss.

Sorry about that. As mentioned, it was the stock long block. I only made a mention to the Livernois block (the replacement) due to lack of mounting studs for the windage tray. Here's the first part of the story: http://www.s197forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17444

And yes, I feel lucky the head survived. The only thing we can figure is the bearing had already slightly spun and the PCM was giving me a hint for a couple of weeks with a "Low Oil Pressure" warning. Car was running great, zero noise, so I thought it was electrical, e.g., sensor. So I let my wife race it and POP. hehehehe....

Oh, and by the way, the oil pump looks fine. I'm replacing it anyway, but the gears looked intact, which leads us back to the bearing having slipped a couple of weeks prior.

We don't run them without a tray, we run them without a factory tray. Either the Canton, or our own tray attached to the pan rail to allow better performance than the stock tray.

Thanks for the input Rick. After reading your post I gave you guys a call and spoke with Dave. After confirming what you posted, he realized he forgot to mention that part when doing the sale with me. I purchased one of the Livernois trays, although I have to get the motor together this week. When I swap out the oil after 1500 miles I'll install the tray.

You guys may want to consider listing it with the blocks on your site so it does not get missed again.
