Hello everyone as yall can probably assume im fairly new to these cars. I picked up a 2007 ford mustang with the 4.0 v6 a few weeks back. Had to replace fuel tank and pump because it was leaking from the tank and the pump was cutting in and out. Now my mustang is leaking transmission fluid and when i drained it it was sliver and as most of yall know thats no good. So i want to know what would be the best options for a rebuild kit and potentially gearing options. I dont know much about this particular car hence why im asking the forums. I know its a tremec t5 trans im just wanting some help finding reliable parts and kits. And yes i know the gears wont come with the rebuild kit im mostly looking at getting as much as possible. Also when im trying to get into reverse its a total pain so i figure rebuild time lol. Car has a new clutch and i have a new throw out waiting to be put in but im gonna do it when i rebuild/replace the trans ideally i need a good budget option because i cant afford to pay 1500-2000 for a replacement trans unfortunately as im a broke teen working at oreillys so yea. Thanks in advance

The problem getting into reverse is a built-in safety feature that Ford thought was necessary so morons couldn't shift into reverse at 75 mph. It's explained in the owners manual which I think you can find on line. As often as it happens it isn't a sign of a failing tranny.

Im more worried about the fact it gets stuck in reverse on occasion with the fact thats it takes me having to try to constantly put it in gear in rapid succession for it to go in gear. Now unless im missing something related to a safety i dont know about on this car but i havent noticed one

Easier and cheaper to get another one on Car-part.com. You can search by distance and maybe get one close enough to not ship it.
I found one on there local to me for a swap into an Opel. Paid under $400.

I am only familiar with the BW T-5 behind 5.0L (86-93) but it might be similar to what you have just different; input splines, ratios and TQ capacity.

First, what color fluid came out with the metal shavings? T-5 take a special fluid (auto trans) and some people fill them with gear lube just to sell the car. This will quiet it down and make it shift smoother but only for a very short time. The gear lube eats the fiber syncros and soon it will grind and not go into any gear.

Second, does it grind or hard to go into other gears? If the problem is only in reverse, try going into 2 or 4 then try to engage reverse.

Third, I doubt it’s the clutch or TB iif all other gears work fine.

Call around and get some estimates. In the past I have paid $500-1,000 for a rebuilt T-5 but not sure what the current price range is? Good luck.

Thanks for that information as far as i can tell it was the specified fluid just filled with metal shavings from what i could tell. And it does go into gear properly and it doesn’t shift hard but it also makes alot of noise (probably because it keeps loosing fluid) but it keeps leaking hence my interest in trying to rebuild it.

I tend to agree with the doubt of the clutch as for the TB im sure its not terrible but i do have the part already when i got the car so im gonna put it in when i fix it. The fluid did smell like atf so im pretty sure it correct. I really wish i could figure out why and how its leaking. Which its so weird that its leaking at the front of the trans case

There is front retaining cover with 4 bolts. Where the input shaft comes out of. There is a seal there but if that’s leaking the clutch would be drenched too.

Post some pics…

Problem getting into reverse is first sign of a bad clutch or a clutch that isn't releasing due to other factors, it's not a trans problem. It can become a trans problem if someone keeps forcing it into gears and the original problem isn't fixed.
You say new clutch, did you install it? Throw-out assembly is part of clutch replacement job, could be your leaking fluid and your non disengagement problem.

I was told the trans and motor on this car have been replaced and when he did the motor he did the clutch. The clutch its self feels great and i have no problem getting into other gears other than reverse. As for the throwout not being replaced he admitted that he had totally spaced it. And the fluid is 100% from the trans as its the fresh fluid i just put in it that’s coming out and i can sit there and watch it drip.

Reverse is non synchronized and it's the first sign of a clutch that won't disengage completely not a clutch that is bad. Many replace the clutch and machine the flywheel. This moves the whole assembly away from the transmission and the throwout bearing so it doesn't release fully.

I believe some T-5 came without and with syncros (brass or fiber) in reverse. Depends on T-5 model and year’s manufactured.

From the owners manual. There is a lockout function. Trouble getting into reverse is built right in to these babies!!! But, what do I know?

Doubtful that you're trans needs rebuilding. The three things I look at when having any shifting issues, are clutch master cylinder, slave/TOB, shifter bushings.

Its leaking transmission fluid bad which is why im interested in rebuilding it im gonna play with the reverse and see if it goes into reverse easier but either way i should probably tear into it and possibly replace syncros while im in it. Ive found the kits with seals and syncros. Now granted i can probably replace the transmission cheaper but my main concern is i need more information about the tremec t5 vs borg warner t5 im interested in the gear ratios and such. Thank for all your help
