I finally pulled the head off my original engine. A couple of years back I had installed Comp 127450 cams, 26125 springs and Comp phaser limiters while I was still N/A. It ran really good at the time (cams, JLT II cai, LT headers) and I knew that I eventually would go FI. I actually got a REALLY good deal on a BNIB FRPP non-intercooled Whipple kit ($2500!) a few months after I installed the cams. A couple months later I installed the Whipple and life was good. It was a few months later when I was on the way home from work and suddenly the car was down on power. I was a couple blocks from home so I limped it into the garage. Took the cam covers off and I found a broken follower, broken valve spring, and a missing exhaust valve. Long story short, there was a manufacturing defect on the valve spring that broke and Comp Cams sent me a check to cover most of the cost to swap in a used stock long block. The shop that did the swap for me still has the valve stem since it was in the exhaust next to the catalytic converter but I have the valve head since it was sitting in the cylinder when I pulled the head. I'm kinda surprised the cylinder is in as good of shape as it is. I truly think it could be cleaned up with a 0.010 overbore. I only felt one scratch that barely catches a fingernail. Of course the head and the piston were hammered pretty good. Here is the album with the rest of the pictures.

Nice carnage!

Awesome to hear that Comp Cams covered the cost of the long block.

Now you've got me all worried. I'm running 16 of those 26125 springs in my 5.4L, along with some pretty nasty cams.

There have been a few people that have had them break over the years. If I were you I might consider switching springs...

Thanks Comp!

STOCK!

I've heard good stuff about Manley and I think trick flow has a set as well. I'm not sure how many different spring manufacturers there are, I would imagine most companies just buy and repackage the same crap. I just know I would never run another comp spring in my life. They left a really bad taste in my mouth.

A few years ago I lost an engine also but mine appeared to be an issue with either using stainless valves and/or the bronze guides. The head of my exhaust valve snapped off and pounded through the piston. My springs and cam followers stayed in tact though. Now I'm not using the 125 springs, just the 113 springs since I'm running a mild 127300 cam. I don't think stainless valves like the extra heat from forced induction.

I don't think I've seen anyone have problems with the 113s, but quite a few people have ad 125 failures. I really wish I would have gone with either the 113s, or a completely different cam.
