well it's like the starter will engage and you can see the crank pulley try to turn a little but its like something is locked...but because the headlights goes completely dead at the turn of the key, I think its electrical ( like that means there is a dead short somewhere......and the way the car just died like you turned a switch off....
I thought it might be alternator, but when I swapped batterys, my battery started the donar car.
if it was shorting youd be blowin fuses, my car died on the track once, ignition fuse burned, wiring for the wideband layed on the header. i know its not the same but if it keeps trying to start and its not burnin fuses, its proly seized

I'm hoping heads, cams, and turbo are ok. Short block is no big deal.

damn, every time I think of pulling money to build mine...this shit stops me.

I was going to go deep on mine this winter BUT dammit, i hate this shit, as I am sure you do as well. You have been a big player and I have enjoyed all of your posts on the car... but dammit

I wish you well, I am ranting because I am losing faith in my future build already. I don't want the fuckin' doom to hit me.

Ouch! ... Sorry to hear that.

The only time I have ever seen a motor fail but still run smooth, until it stopped, the crank broke in to 3 pieces. Seems unlikely given the make-up of our motor, you would figure a rod would shatter first. I don't think I've heard of a crank failure yet anyway.

Whatever it was, it will be interesting to find out. Keep us posted. Sorry you have to find out in the first place. Good Luck!

Dave . After you drain the oil and pull the pan I would love to see a pic of the bottom of the pan before you clean it . As you must already know I know the feeling . Im just gathering info since mine was a little darker than I would have liked to have seen it last weekend. Thanks Billy

Odd that it killed off like that with no prior signs. Just another small bump in the road. Luckily it shut off quickly, so perhaps less damage was done.

Had two of them do that so far. Mind you...they were stock shortblocks but that's exactly how they died.

It spun at least one rod bearing. Looks like 2. #7 is hot on the rod and cap side. #2 is hot only on the cap side.
Pan looks like you went panning for silver.
Now I have to worry about turbo and heads and cam. The scavenger pump, which pulls oil from the turbo and returns it to the pan has plenty of gritty metal in it so it clearly went thru the turbo...
Hope the heads and cams are not hurt.

Those rod caps got hot FAST, if all that happened between the 1-2 shift.
