Damn.. what pistons and were the tolerances checked? Also what did the filter look like? What tensioners? Metal or plastic? New or used? Stock vct? Go away when warm? Oil pressure? What oil?

Lot of work pulling it and tearing it down just because. If making metal then I understand

Pistons are billet manleys. .020 over I believe.
Tensioner were upgraded to the steel ones.
New tensioners. Everything came from modmax.
Stock cams stock valve train. Stiffer springs, stronger chains, and bigger intake valves...
Noise when warm. I only idled it for 10 min the first time. Then 20 min. Then the next day it ran for 30 min. I check on it every 5 min. Temp was norm. Oil pressure was norm... then when I went to bring it back into the garage it sounded like a diesel with a rod knock soooo.... really bad. Barely ran enough to get it back into the garage.
Oil is valvoline. Till 6 - 9k then gets full syn.

You know it really pissed me off when I got almost 10k into this motor and this happens... it's not like this engine shop builds motors one day... flips burgers the next... and flies air planes the next day... This is all they do... so wtf am I missing here!!! Now I can assemble a SBC in my sleep but never messed with a mod motor so I had them assemble the whole long block... I even pre - primed the engine so it was NOT a dry engine---

Yeah, that is fukd.. They going to take care of any of that? I would like to have seen a spec sheet of the clearances they used. They ever build a mod motor before? That is the first thing I would have asked them before?

Sum bitch.... that blows big time

Yea this is guy is "thee" guy around here... they got a 5.4 on e85 in a rail running 8s. When shops have problems with mod motors they call this guy to come diagnosis or fix them. The builder and the owner came over to my house last night. The builder looked like he was gonna puke. The owner said he will make it right. ...

Is the end of that supercharger snout drilled so you can use a pulley install tool to properly draw on the pulley mounting hub? I'd be concerned about running it without it being on the taper properly. It's possible the drive shaft was damaged when the hub fell off. Might want to dismantle the nose drive and take it all to a machine shop.

Man, really sucks, hope you get it all figured out.

I read these type of threads and get turned off building mine, then read a successful one and get hyped to finish mine....what an emotional roller coaster this is becoming.

The passenger timing chain arm broke in half!? It's brand new! Is this common?

Well at least it's not something major in the shortblock. You should be back up and running in no time.

Isn't the metallic flake from the pan an indicator that it IS (or has caused, rather) a major issue in the short block? Not questioning you, just trying to learn and understand. That would certainly explain the awful noise, so does that mean the flake in the oil is just from the break-in?

These are pics sent from the builder....

We called around to ford mechanics and local private shops and they all say this is common!? Wtf. I've never heard of this. Found that MMR makes billet ones.... Any comments on this issue is appreciated. Thanks

Have not tried the billet arms but yeah, seems to happen quite a bit. Lucky that you did not jump teeth on the cam gears sending valves crashing into pistons...

I am almost wondering how many of these problems are with cars with the steel 2v tensioners. I have them and almost want to pull the cover to inspect how it is performing.

Sure explains all the noise and as mentioned above you would expect some metal on break in heat cycle... then immediately change the oil. That sure seems like a lot of metal tho.. even for break in. Some of those shavings look like they are big enough to have part numbers on them. The arm breaking would have nothing to do with that tho..

I dunno crown. Headed up there in a few to personally set eyes on it. Gonna pull the head and take a look and pull the mains and rod caps.

So I regretted not making a time lapse video of the first pull and motor put.... so seeing how I had to take it back out I set the GoPro up. Time lapse looks pretty cool. I'll post it when I finish it.
