It sounds like he's not that serious about FStock, and might even run it on street tires, so I wouldn't worry about swapping this or that. Just put the parts on you want and ask them what class you fit in. :)

I was just trying to point out that since the OP mentioned the stock class, him making changes without regard to how the classes are structured is a quick way for a simple change to put him in a class they he my not be ready for. Last thing a novice needs is to end up in SM. (not saying the wheels puts him in SM, that was just a for instance) It can be discouraging to be very outclassed as a novice, you never get a good feel for how you are progressing or what you really are capable of. If someone is planning on autocrossing and they haven't make any modifications it makes the most sense for them to read through the rules and figure out where they want to be before making any changes.

What wheels does the FP8 package come with? I've got no problem doing a backdate/update and sticky taping dumb louvers to my windows to compete with better wheels.

Since you're moving from FWD to RWD, I would spend some time driving the car in a few events before spending alot of money. You need to establish a baseline before spending money to make it go fast. I would only buy a set of RTR legal tires...maybe Koni Sport shocks if your budget allows it.

I think the RTR class is a great way to compete. Besides the occasional new driver, our region doesn't have any other F-Stock cars. Last year we had some close battles in RTR...good drivers that normally compete in other classes.

This. It also happens to be exactly what I'm doing right now. The FWD->RWD is quite a change & requires recalibrating your driving style. Oddly, my region so far has basically no FS class, so RTR is where everyone is at anyway. So far I'm just assisting in providing trophies for the faster guys...

We run an indexed pro class, so looking for competition without having to bump class is easy. Pops is keeping his DS mini, so if there is a small technical course, I can still bum a drive from him.

That was me for a couple of years, but I suddenly got the hang of it in 2012 (Shocks and an alignment also helped). I had a few RTR wins and was competitive in PAX with the other fast drivers in my region.

Everything seem to click for me after attending a local Autocross school. I received some good advice from a good driver and was able to get about 20 runs. I learned to autocross in an AWD Turbo and was competitive in that car, but it took me awhile figure out the Mustang. The tire pressures are alot different and managing the throttle are the biggest changes compared to the AWD.

Other classes you could run include:

  • STX (hopefully STU someday soon)
  • ESP (just don't buy a Watts Link that isn't made by Steeda or Fays2)
  • SM (don't plan on winning)
  • RTR/FS or RTR/ESP
I think of these 4 choices (FS, STX, ESP, SM, RTR) the only logical answer at the moment is ESP. You can still run the giant gumball R compounds and fancy shocks, but you can add negative camber up front to keep from shredding the outer shoulders, and add spring rate to keep the car from flopping around like a fish. If or when these cars are moved up to STU class that would be an even more cost effective option. And if you want to run on 140+ treadwear tires but utilize the mods from one of these other classes (FS or ESP), try the new RTR category. Saves you many thousands a year in your Hoosier budget by switching to ST tires.

Good luck,
1. You can run ESP in the RTR index?????

2. I've sent a letter to the SEB about S197's being moved to STU as well. Actaully, for my region I'm shooting to talk them into allowing me to run STU and not STX. Otherwise I am going to run TSM (SM but with street tires, our regoin has this) or, if you can do RTR ESP (first I've seen mention of this).

Most regions have a catch all street tire class. Sounds like yours is T. Up here it is R, F, and A for rear, front, and all wheel drive. You class your car accordingly and then run on index. So an ESP prepped car could run "R" that would put you in the index class and your time is factored accordingly.

On a 60 second course the jump from STX to ESP on pax is over a second difference (.827 to .849). So your 60 second run is a 49.62 in STX and 50.94 in ESP.

It is pretty popular, we usually get about 30 cars that run in R.

National events are a different story.

We have RTR, but it only applies to stock classes per the official Solo rules. Before RTR, we had "T", for street tire, in limited classes. Since there is now an RTR, "T" is sparcely used. I've just never seen a street prepared class under street tires.

I see what Terry was talking about now, though.

RT is for stock classes only. ST classes already run on "street" tires. You can run "street" tires in SP, but you'd get smoked nationally trying that (just like SM or any other category that is not limited to street tires).

Regionally, they might offer a road-tire type class even if you are on SP (vs stock or ST). I know Steel Cities does.

I just put in a schroth rallye 3 in my car. With the recaros, I can't really put them away but I have them buckled behind the seat so they're out of the way unless I want them. It's a non issue if you have standard seats as you could just throw them on the rear floorboard/under the seat

I haven't found where the proposed changes for Stock class have been mentioned.

http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/assets/13-fastrack-april-solo.pdf

Seems to me it is basically a shift back to street tires (140? or 220 wear) and some relaxing of the underlying stock rules: camber adjustment, two sways, plus or minus one on wheel diameter, no change to rim width. It's all in the PROPOSED changes.

Category would be called "Street". Quite a bit of discussion in the San Diego SCCA Solo forum.

Unless I missed another or two, there was just one F Stock Mustang at the San Diego Tour today.

Only one...

Yep, Frank, that's all there was. I've been watching that for months, hoping that someone else would enter, but no one did. If we could have made a class of five, i'd have been there. At least then I could have partially justified the expense with a chance at a couple of free Hoosiers...
