Worst case would be if that broke off, windowed the block, and destroyed the head. Had a N2O stock 2v buddy do that to one of his rods, except he started his car while spraying (which is why god invented nitrous arming switches... which only work if you actually install them lol).

Get it torn down, have the block/crank/heads inspected (if they check out good) and cleaned. Lots of options for a rebuild. My personal fav is boss rods with a set of Mahle pistons (9.3:1 if you like your current boost or a nudge higher, 8.5:1 if you really want to crank it up). Definately need to iron out your intercooler issues, and maybe think about e85 or water/meth kit. I'd bet dollars to donuts that rod/piston were pulverized by pre-ignition due to high charge temps and lack of octane. If you have any doubts about your tune source, I would shop a new tuner as well (Lito if he still does it, Lund if you can't get Lito, or stick with who you normally use if you're confident in them).

Popping a stock 3v is a blessing and a curse. I wish, sometimes, mine had let go. I would still own the car. The curse side would be, I'd be poorer temporarily, but with a built motor and the boost off it's leash (was wastegated D1SC).

Hope to see ya do a build thread! Sorry it let go, regardless 2v/3v/4v OHC/pushrod NA/FI/N2O or brand, detonation will kill them all. Beat the heat, bump the octane, tune well, and life will be good again.

This. You were lucky to only have one broken piston and a bent rod. Could have been far worse. The corresponding cylinder wall, and the rod journal on the crank may be damaged so those will be things to check. At worst you might need to resleeve the cylinder and get a replacement forged crank in addition to forged rods/pistons.
Agree with everything 702GT posted about fixing the underlying problems that caused the detonation.

John Stone, I feel your pain. My 4.6 let go at Summit Point. Stock engine, Saleen supercharged, over-boosted (about 12 psi), and tuned. Running hot, redlining, chasing a pesky ZL1...

The magic happens around 22:20

Seven pistons cracked, six rods broke and a big hole punched in the side of the block. DSCN2677 (002).JPG It took over a year, but she's back together now with a Ford Racing forged shortblock, ported heads, a 12 qt oil pan, and other needlessly expensive stuff. Putting some finishing touches on now to address the heat issues (larger intercooler, pump, Tiger Racing hood). Just wanted to share. Good luck with build...

You running E85 for the track? I thought your IAT's were pretty fair for a Saleen blower in that application. 130's-140's is pretty good considering. It only took me 2 or 3 good back-to-back 4th gear wind-outs to get the D1SC that hot in spring weather (80's-90's). Made such a huge difference when I switched to E85, car ran cooler all-around, and didn't have to start pulling timing 'til it got ridiculous (was push 23 degrees of spark as high as 155 IAT's, tuner wanted to go a bit further but I had to remind him that e85 or not, the stock pistons may melt just to spite me lol). Which FRPP shortblock you go with?

My 05 has 100,000 on the stock motor.
It has had a Saleen Supercharger on it since September of 2006. It is running 12 psi of boost putting down 543 rwhp. It has seen over 3,000 1/4 mile runs and 90,000 miles of hard street use with the blower on it.

Nice to know your engine holds up fine. I recently bought a 06 with vortech on a stock bottom end, putting out 520rwhp. For weeks I was a bit concerned maybe it's pushing its limit. But looks like many guys are running similar numbers and don't have problems with a good tune and keep up with maintenance etc
