Front crankshaft oil leak?

Sometimes I don't like my car......

I made some pictures from my engine in order to build a home made front splitter and found this:leak.jpg

Looks like an oil leak from the front seal? Or could this be the RTV at the bolt?
Is this a common problem, can't remember forum threads about this on a 4.6. Car has 50000 mi, so not much.
The oil at the steering hydraulic hose is from the oil filter change, but all other?

Do I need special tools to remove/install the oil seal?

Thanks!

Probably the front seal. I’ve done mine. Once replacing the front cover and once when I did a new timing set. I have a seal driver set but o suppose you can use a socket if you have one that size. You’ll need a crank pulley tool. If you rent one get the one for Chrysler not the ford one.

Thanks for your opinion. Removing the seal with a hook or so?

Rockauto has several, Timken is ok?
New bolt?

Timken is very reputable. I actually cut mine the last time. Just be careful not to score the seal seat.

Imo doesnt look no where near needing any addressal. If it was a legit leak oil would be flung everywhere with alot more dirt stuck to it and it would drip on the ground when the car sits. Dynamic seals are rarely ever 100% even when new. Just throwing it out there, otherwise tiny oil seepages like this can drive you mad. Lol

Hmmm, you are right, it's not an urgent case. I will actively watch it, order the parts and put it on my "someday" list. Thanks

Mine looked the same at 85,000 miles. I put my new seal in with a seal driver, with the cover sitting on some wood on my bench.

Make sure you install it with the sealing surface perpendicular to the shaft or it won't last. Seems easy.

Anyone have a link to the seal driver, or know the socket size needed to do this?

OTC Ford Custom tools are $$$. But the pictures give you and idea what the tools look like if you wanted to find something similar or make your own. Also freedom racing will loan the used tools for 50% of the cost.

It could just be oil getting past the keyway for the harmonic balancer.

Thanks for the input. Haven't done anything over the last days. I hope I can do it without the special tools, it will probably take more time that I thought. It is also oily inside of the pulley, will do some more pictures to see where the leak is (?).

So there is a separate tool for removing and installing the seal? Seems like a pain. I'm glad Freedom loans tools out.

Seal remover... well that's a drywall screw and a pair of vise grips.

Installer... I think you can see how a piece of tubing, a piece of flat stock, a drill, and a bolt (at worst,) could do the job.

These $$$$ tools are for mechanics who are doing the job every day.
