Gt500 fuel pump kit question, need help

I just installed the Motorsport gt500 fuel pump kit. Upon start up it smells like it is real rich and it will not stay running. I cranked a couple times then it started up and stalled almost immediately. I cranked again and it fired up. I touched the gas and it stalled. My question is does it need a tune to compensate for the extra driver?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie

No you should be ablestart up and run normally. I havedone 2 of these and both behaved like stock on startup. Are your fuel levels registering ok? Maybe some wiring issue

So you went from a stock pump to a dual pump setup? Then yes you need the tune adjusted. Will it be close enough to start and drive sure, if you are having trouble getting the car to idle and run you can do so with the maf unplugged. Once the car is good and warm should be easier to start up.

BTW what do you mean by "Motorsport" gt500 fuel kit.

I will never get these computers. I had a bone stock gt and installed a GT500 fuel system with dual fdpms. Ran perfect. I already had my wideband/fuel psi gauges installed. No noticeable changes after the install but did not datalog at that point (stock tune). I ran it that way for a few months before installing the supercharger. The only hiccup I encountered was after installing my exhaust (prior to sc). Around 2100 RPM under load after I installed LT headers/offroad x but doubt that was fuel pump related. I had a slightly leaner (13.something) AFR. Again, that was after the exhaust and prior to the supercharger (sc required tune obviously).

Not sure why some people have issues and some do not. Is everything installed correctly?

Has alot to do with the current tune in the car and the way different tuners handle fuel trims/tuning from my experience. The stock tune with adaptive learning should start and drive fine with the swap, but you still need to adjsut the fuel trims to prevent pressure spikes, and dumping fuel when coming off throttle etc. Imho thats the reason this is hit or miss for so many.

So the way the op's current tune is setup, injectors size, and with a cold motor could have just flooded it from the get go making the additional tries to start unsucessful.

That makes perfect sense. How easy/hard is it to remote tune something like the OP is experiencing?

Also, now you mention it, I think I remember the fuel guage would increase about 10psi after letting off from WOT... I though I just never noticed it before with the stock pumps, but thought it was odd..

Not hard at all for a good tuner, all he needs is the datalogs to see whats going on and make adjustments as necessary.

Yes and thats one sympton I had as well, when I built and installed my first dual pump setup it was rich on startup and throttle tip in, also when I would let off the throttle my pressure would spike up and dump fuel as my wideband would go rich 10:1, After I had it tuned it went away and didn't do it anymore.

LOL gotcha just making sure, yeah its just the gt500/frpp dual fuel pump system. Wasn't sure why you put Motorpsort.

At least you read my mind. So to sum up this is a tune issue? I will call the tuner tomorrow. I just want to get it running to drive in the trailer as I still have to put on the ford racing intake and bigger injectors before I take it to get tuned. Thanks again for your help.

What tune is on the car now? What size injectors, was the motor cold when you tried to start it? What is your before fuel setup?

If the car is not going far you can drive the car out of a garage/driveway onto a trailer with the MAF unplugged...I have done it a couple of times.

You will have to check back what you did.

If can ran before the swap, have to run with the new pumps.

Did you put the fuse in the fuse holder? Put the relay back in under the hood?

I often catch myself calling saying Ford Motorsports as well, and then making the correction statement of Ford Racing Performance Parts, as many people look at you funny not realizing it was the original name for Fords aftermarket line of race parts.

Got it figured out. Something stupid on my part. Car runs fine. Time to put the intake and injectors in and get tuned. Thanks to everyone.
