Just a follow up on the CHE brace I installed awhile back. It really helps with traction. I haven't been able to make it to the track but I have had to do a few pulls to fine tune my gasoline tune.

I'm not much of a suspension guy. I don't know why certain things do what they do so I can't really say what this is helping with. A guess would be flex and rebound is lessened. At any rate it's a worthwhile traction mod. Wish I knew why, lol.

I assume that you mean the K-member brace with the torque limiters. What that accomplishes is limit how far the engine rocks over under torque loading and how much it rebounds if traction is momentarily reduced. Engine mount energy storage and release is a contributor to wheel hop, sort of like OE rear control arm bushings. The additional firmness is probably noticeable as feeling that the throttle response is just a little more immediate / hits the tires a little quicker.

Sorry guys, not in here to post up about our new axle brace....

BUT, I am here to say that JPC cut a blistering 1.1 sixty foot on our Relocation Brackets, BOLTED-IN, not welded.

Wow!

Yeah that is pretty sweet. I liked the design alot when I ran them, but I had them welded anyway "just in case". But this pretty much proves you don't need to unless the JPC car is 2900# and you have a 3800# car maybe and trying to run 8s.

Out of curiosity, does anyone feel the use of a Torque Arm would serve as an alternative to needing to weld the axle tubes of a car since its supposed to limit the amount of twisting seen by the rear housing?

I'm sure there is still some twisting taking place when using a TA but I'm not sure how much twisting we're talking that is taking place when people run into this issue.

our car was 3460 in BG on a Radial to boot.

With that alien amount of traction I'd feel a whole lot more secure having them welded by somebody with certs.

If it was mine, I'd still leave the bolts in and torqued even after welding, unless I had all of the locating holes (including the OE bracket holes) plug-welded up solid as well.

Bolts can loosen in street service, and suspension checking and bolt retorqueing on street-driven cars isn't frequent enough to even call it hit or miss.

With that in mind, posting what this specific mod is capable of withstanding strengthwise at the track is misleading as far as its applicability for long term set-it-and-forget-it durability in street use is concerned.

Two entirely different considerations for two entirely different situations should not be confused with each other.

No flame to Kelly, BMR, or this product intended. Just its potential misuse or mis-application.

Since a torque arm removes axle torque reaction loads from the LCAs, it is at least a case of not as much welding needed to be done (think in terms of smaller welds being strong enough even though it might not be practical to actually make them that small).

Since this all depends on many external circumstances, I don't think a blanket statement that "no torque arm car would ever need the axle tubes welded" can be made.

Good post Norm, and I cannot say that I disagree with you.

However, please do not forget that the entire suspension on these cars is "bolted" together.

There is nothing wrong with bolting on our relocation brackets, for just about every person who decides to run them.

The odds of a bolt torqued to 130ft lbs, with a nylon retaining nut, coming loose, are probably worse than hitting the lottery.

If I were to weld them, or recommend to someone else, it would be purely in concern of shearing bolts.

I work on 8.8" Mustang rears for a local Ford dealer and they gave me a 2013 GT500 rear and it had very nice true rosette welds (looked shiny like nickle was used) added on each side of the pumpkin casting (in addition to the usual friction welded ones). I never saw them before and asked the manager. He said the factory must be addressing a concern. Just letting you know that Ford is making changes to correct this.

^ That is correct.

A while after I started this thread I got a mysterious call from an "anonymous" caller - who gave me the scoop on what was happening, internally, at Ford to help with this issue.

If I had to guess, I have probably had around 10 customers twist an axle tube with nothing more than lowering springs, and a tune, on stock tires.
