For the past week, we've been driving my car around everywhere. Just yesterday, we took my girlfriends car out (hadn't moved at all since then) Finally, went to walmart last night getting some beer, then she tells me the engine is over heating. Well, shut it off, waited a bit for it to cool down, and look inside the radiator fluid reservoir and after all the smoke fucking cleared, the bitch was EMPTY!! I just shit when I saw it! luckily, we had a 5 gallon jug of water in the backseat, filled it to the correct fill level and drove straight home. I just need a time frame of how long you think this thing would run for without radiator fluid at all. It was either one of two dealerships or a body shop, or someone pulled a disgusting fucking prank. And I checked the plug, it was fine and no apparent leaks overnight either. Appreciate the help everyone.

My car overheated recently because the thermostat got stuck.

I drove the car for a few miles but really gently.

I could see that the temperature needle was maxed out and I had that "thermometer" dash light on.

When I saw steam come out of the engine bay I knew it was time to stop.

Some people here commented that I was lucky I didn't blow a head gasket - that would not have been fun.

That may have been the case, but the only other time it had been in ffor service was about 14 months ago coming back from San Antonio. hit a fuckin Raccoon, new radiator with no problems. Oh, and the thermostat was replaced about three months ago under warranty. That was the first problem a while back. Thanks for the help guys, any other ideas?

off to check the water pump...

maybe a burp

new thermostat 3 months ago? that coulda been the burp; i only partially burped my 01 v6 mustang and the heat came and went for years after that :)

on a real note, i had a friend that has the 5.4l 3v in a 2005 f250 super duty right. and he noted that his truck would over heat sometimes. well he was under the impression that if the check engine light didn't come on when this occured, then there wasn't a problem..? (he doesn't know what oil goes in his truck) so he let this continue until the check engine light did come on. And even then, he'd just turn the truck off and then right back on, and the CEL would go out, so he would drive some more!! fortunately it didn't blink, however, when he finally decided to tell me about all this, i told him he was a nut for letting it go that far, and that the check engine light wouldn't come on for an overheating condition until the motor began to misfire! well, it turns out, i was wrong. if you over heat his truck (and i'm going to assume our cars) hard enough, for long enough, you will get a wild p2*** something code (i cannot remember the code #s; typical scanner will say manufacturer's code anyway) but it was the only code, and the code indicated that the computer had realized he didn't care that the meter said HOT, so it began to not fire coils, so that heat was not generated, and cool air was pumped through, in an effort to keep the motor from getting to hot.

this dummy resistant process seemed to have saved his truck; i put a new thermostat in, and everything was ok.. and that was 5k miles ago so.. i'd say you can likely drive the piss out of it while it's over heating, and it will likely not die.. ??

i'm a laid-off ford mechanic, and i've pushed cars really hard just to see if they would die competely (hey we told the lady it needs a new motor anyway) and you would be surprised and what they will take. my friend with the f250 ran his 3v a whoolllllee lot hotter than i woulda, including flipping the key off and right back on, cause it was running funny (intentional misfire cooling mode) and the CEL was on, and then kept on driving it.. and she took it.

just my $.02

BTW- its coolant not radiator 'fluid' :)

Or just water for some of us.

Eh, it's a fluid, I don't give two shits.. lol. and yes, in this part of Texas, water is just fine. haha.

Hmmm, interesting story. Thanks, since it's got a CEL and still under warranty, we're going to take it in tomorrow and let it be their problem.

I just don't get her car, I've had my car in limp home mode for two weeks and drove like that on a few highway rides due to tuning problems, bounced of the rev limiter numerous times, spun out, raced and ran the piss out of it and even done a few donuts a couple of times, and this bitch is running fine after almost 35K miles. Hers is completely stock, never raced and has had more problems that I have fingers and toes.. Fucking ford.. lol.

Says the man who apparently doesn't have the slightest clue about the cooling properties of anti freeze.

Not that you have ever heard this one before..........but you should have gotten a V8 :) They actually have a fail safe coolant mode that will allow you to drive the vehicle with low coolant or in an overheating condition for limited miles (dependent on ambient temperature) without damage to the motor.

I'm getting one.. :thumb: and the car can be run on water only, but would I run it like that for more than just a small drive to get some antifreeze, hell no. It's already got new antifreeze and figured out it was our bitch neighbor and her bf who drained it. It was not the fault of any shop/dealership. Shit, I can't wait to move up to Katy. Fuck this place.

I just wanted to let everyone here know that the dick in my mouth is bigger than the dick in my ass.

See, I can do it too.. Ugh, can you seriously STOP fucking up my threads. It's getting really old man, and when you get your IC finally and new pulley. good for you, it's still not going to be a worthy track car, nor a real GT500, no matter how many coats of paint you put on there.

Who does that? That's some low shit. Did you run over their dog or something?
