Hey guys and gals I'm just about ready to call it quits and burn this car down to the floor! I kid I kid but I'm just tired of dumping money into this car, recently my car wouldn't hold a charge so I pulled and tested the alternator and it tested bad. Replaced the alternator and tossed a fresh battery in there. The car was fine for a few miles but it started to knock again I pulled the codes and this is what came up:

P0141
P0138
P0161
P0340
P0344
P0012
P2196

The car knocks pretty badly after about 10 minutes of driving (once the car is fully warmed up) and sometimes stalls and dies on me. I've replaced both CAM POS sensors so I'm leaning toward the cam phasers. Any advice here?

2007 3V, 62.5K miles Edlebrock E force, bassani X pipe (catted) bassani axle back, AutoLite HT0's and I can't think of anything else that would come into play.

The last time I saw a thread with these symptoms the car had lost oil to the top end due to a phaser issue, some screens were plugged... which then ate up the cam bearings, which ate up the main bearings.

You need an oil pressure gauge to diagnose. People commonly take the car to the dealership and they can hook one up and they'll know from experience what has happened.

I really hope the motor isn't gone on this thing. I wasn't planning on building a motor for at least another year, if it's the motor I'm just going to pull the blower off and sell the car for peanuts lol. Here's a quick video of the noise my car is making

Woah, I would not run the motor with that noise!!!
Definitely a mechanical issue.

What was your oil pressure?

My original motor never knocked or had those noises, but it did idle like if I had hot rod cams.
My VCT solenoids were clogged up with metal that came from a disintegrated thrust bearing; the rest is history.

You sir are the exact person I didn't want to come in here lol I read your build thread and it's scared the heck out me. I hope it isn't the motor, the funny thing is that the car runs like this for about 15-20 seconds then "corrects" itself and doesn't do it for a while. It's gradually gotten worse so I'm praying to the 3V gods that it's just the phaser

Damn that sounds like aids and rape, don't even start it again. Bit louder than a phaser issue though.

Haha, sorry... :(
Mine did the same thing. I would turn it on and it would be perfect, a few minutes later, it would idle like crap and stall. It was random, sometime it started normal other times bad. It must have been due to the accumulation of metal blocking the screens in the VCT solenoids.

If you are willing, remove the valve covers and inspect the VCT solenoids, they have metal screens and make sure they are not blocked with debris.

These cars don't have cam bearings, must of been the journals. Once they are gone it's time for a new set of heads.

It's hard to tell on the internet through my laptop and I'm not an expert but my guess would be that you have bearing issues. If you tear the motor down for inspection now the block will still be ok. If you wait for it to seize up then anything can happen.

Hopefully it's something easy like a phaser but I doubt it.

Broke dafuk down
I have heard phaser in a 4.6 3v in a expedition sound that bad. Thought initially was a rod cause no way anything else could be that loud. Glad it was simple.. we replaced vct solenoids, chains, guides and tensioners while in there. 150k miles now and that was around 20k miles ago.

Check your oil... cut the filter if you can. If you lost a rod bearing you will find metal.

Vct screens have a habit of clogging up and limiting oil also. You would be surprised how little it takes to screw up those oil circuits

I am going to go out on a limb and say it is not a bad bearing here. Vct can cause all sorts of weird codes also

Sounds like my 2V did after i sucked up some water, hydro-locked it and bent a rod. I rebuilt the whole thing and the only thing i could find wrong was that one rod wasn't straight and was hitting the cylinder wall. I had my machinist check it over and then I slapped a new rod and rings. Ran great for years after the rebuild.

I hope it is just a phaser though for your sake.

I'm pulling everything apart this weekend, hopefully if the 3V gods are good to me it'll just be the phaser. Either way if the journals aren't shot or it isn't a bent rod I'll order the FRPP cam timing kit and replace everything along with the cams. Keeping my fingers crossed :)
