Not a dumb question. Just look at a tire height calculator. The difference between my 275/40/18 and 275/35/20 is 1" so you gain a half inch on each side of the wheel. 1/2 inch of lift. I would really just recommend a taller tire if that is a complaint

255/35/18 is a 25 inch tire... Factory is a 27 inch tire. Changing rim sizes has nothing to do with changing the height. It all depends on the tires you use.

I think he's switched up some numbers. Pretty sure stock is 235/55/17 unless you had polished 18s, right?

i have the polished 18"s i had the stocker bgf 235/5518's and got some all seasons perellis in 255/35/18"s but yeah it was about a 2" difference between tires when compared side to side.

but my thought process is to get 20"s with a 40 sidewall tire and not sure on width as obviously dont have the rims yet.

You'll want a 35% sidewall ratio most likely.
