Ported Stock Intake - Pic Heavy

Well I ported a stock intake last night and wanted to share the pics. I removed the teeth, the wall, and cut down the ramps on the inlet and blended the ridges and cleaned up the misaligned seams on the ports. All in all I think it turned out pretty sweet. Planning to install tomorrow or Saturday so I'll let everyone know how it feels. Also plan to get back to the track next week to see how it runs. Anyway, check out the pics...

Wonder what the purpose of the fins were...to direct airflow, but why

That's a nice job man, bet you gain about 1 mph in et and maybe 1-1.5tenths once the car adjusts for the increased airflow.

I cannot find the article, but what I remember is that ford designed the intake with the fins to smooth out the turbulence and when removed they did nothing for increasing air flow (hard to believe though). I would be interested in hearing about the results.

Looking like a Moray eel with an attitude, the "whoosh fingers" in the intake manifold entry are there to quiet the whoosh you get when tipping into the throttle. Adam Christian assured us, "They cost no power, for the record. It's like a tenth. The first thing everyone will want to do is grind them off-and that's fine, I would too-but it's not going to get you anything. We tried it."

The aftermarket always thinks they can improve on what the mfg does. Sometimes the mfg does stupid things, I mean look at that silly cockpit sound tube they put in our cars! Lol Shaun from AED is the only one I know of that ported his and he had positive results. Our intakes are pretty similar to the LSx intakes and they didnt have fins and they benefited from porting. I dont know, we'll see. Hopefully the results are good and positive!

I bet you'll get more intake noise and that's about it. Actual results will be undesernable from test variables. I think an air temperature change will have larger impacts.

Thanks for posting, looks like a good read. So they were put there for sound purposes. They said they removed them and got nothing, but thats on a stock motor. What about a modded motor with a better breathing intake and exhaust and better tuning?

A guy on svtperf said he ported his similar to mine and gained a consistant 1 mph in the 1/4 and had improved throttle response....like I said, I don't know we'll see.

Nice job. One thing you know for sure is the porting won't slow you down. I mean if it does I will put "woosh fingers" in my CAI and find a way to the weld them to the intake side of he heads. That is if the obstruction in air flow will actually make you faster. Lol. Looking forward to the results.

i honestly don't think what was done will make any difference at all.

and now that i take a second look at those runners, if you dont do something to smooth down all those areas that you put the dremel to, i would almost wager you could hurt power. look at how smooth the area was before (minus the one little casting line) and now look at how beat up that is from the porting. all i see there is a rough area that will impede, or rather, slow down the velocity of the incoming air.

One of the LSx guys dyno'd cars before and after having LS3 intakes ported. He found many of the popular port jobs actually lost hp...

I use to have an LS2 GTO and know lots of guys that had ported intakes with good results. Who knows if that will carry over to our cars, but Im gonna find out!

Well if you actually put your finger in one of the runners you would see for yourself that it is indeed very smooth. You cant really judge the "smoothness" from my cell phone pics.

Watching a car show currently, and it was talking about using the intake spacers on older vehicles for a couple of extra HP. They were saying the spiral helped disrupt the air, which helped the air/fuel mix more thoroughly, helping HP

Just thought it was interesting, as it's going the opposite way in hopes of achieving the same thing.
