Just traded my 2010 in for a white 2011 5.0L 6 speed. Looking to do a CAI and tune. I know there are a plethora of aftermarket intakes for these cars but I came across one in particular that has my attention and wanted to see if anyone else had any experience or insight.

Company is called Western Motorsports and evidently they have been making centerline air intakes since the intro of the S197 in 2005. I never understood why Ford didn't take advantage of the center mounted TB on the 3V engine.

In addition to added performance I just like the way it looks. They claim it is compatible with a stock hood and with a different backplate can seal to an aftermarket ram air hood. If anyone has any information or experience with this please let me know

Thanks

Eric

I love the concept behind it, but have mixed feelings about how it looks and how it may perform. Seems to me the there wouldn't be much gain from it being right there unless you had a hood that dumped right onto it and if I'm not mistaken, a lot of the ram air style hoods out there are ducted and dump onto the stock air filter location. I'm no expert though, just offering up my thoughts. :)

I called and spoke with them about it a few months ago. I wasn't impressed enough with their technical explanation of how it worked. They reuse the stock cold air inlet and vent it BEHIND the filter. The 2 slots seen in the pic above. There is not enough area there to make any difference whatsoever.

Another thing to consider is Boss intake fitment if you want to go down that path. The 3 mentioned all fit. I doubt this kit will work without having to purchase a separate inlet from the same company.

It is also more expensive than other more proven designs. JLT, Steeda, or Airaid would all be better choices along with a greater market for tunes to go with them.

Unless they gave one to me for free I wouldn't consider running it.

The filter is tiny to fit where they have it. Once you see it in person you will agree.

I too was looking at the WMS cai. After talking to several tuners i wouldnt get it. I was told because of the placement of the maf i would get drivability issues.

It cant really get cold air there (inf fact its probably pretty warm from the radiator), so its all gotta be coming from the stock inlet which Im assuming is plumbed in somewhere.
Overall doesnt look very effective.

Also, The length and diameter of the intake tube most likely has some important resonance, so making the intake tract shorter may not be a good thing.

Other than looks I don't know why anyone would buy a CAI for a 2011 GT. $300.00 to $400.00 bucks for 5 or 6 peak rwhp just isn't worth the money to me.

Didn't they have tuning issues with their 05-09 kits? I remember wanting one for the GT when they came out, but the threads that popped up about tuning issues kept me away.

I've seen gains of 10-15whp with intake alone, ive seen with LT headers+O/R mid-pipe, no other mods, someone picked up 25whp after adding a steeda CAI.. so.. I'm sure the CAI helps more with more mods. considering there aren't a lot of bolt-on mods available for these cars every little bit helps. The 3 big brands already mentioned have very similiar gains according to Steeda who tested them all. I think Steeda has good quality but you have to pay for that, you can't go wrong with any of those 3. as far as the WMS, haven't seen enough info to say anything other than I wouldn't get one because I haven't seen enough info about them. If they were good they'd send free ones to the tuners and tuners would say hey these gave us the best whp numbers, you should use them. (most popular/good shops will be honest about that sort of thing) Since i'm not seeing that I suspect that isn't the case.

I do plan on getting a boss intake manifold and an O/R X pipe before racing season starts next year, so I'm sure the CAI will have been worth the investment at that point.

That intake looks to restrictive when the hood would be closed.
