the 5r55s even built has not shown longevity from what I've seen in that power area.

you'd be ok for a while if you're not beating on it a lot, but long term, IMO get the 4r70w

I took out a perfectly-good 5r55s just for this very same reason, because I did not think it would hold up to 700+ hp. If you go with a 4r70, dont get a Lentech. (see my thread in this section for why not!)

I would also say just save yourself some time and money and just go with the 4R70W. The 5r55's internal parts just don't have the physical size to be built to hold big power. The 5r, when built to the max, is good for about 550-600rwhp maximum. Power levels higher then that and it's just a ticking time bomb.

I would recommend talking to Freddy Brown at http://www.fbperformance.com/ Freddy is one of the best with the 4R and has a complete kit for converting our cars.

in my opinion, 600 rwhp on a built 5r will be fine. JDM runs the 5rs in their 600+rwhp cars running 10's all day.I believe all they have is servos and hardened input shaft. The band upgrades do minimal compared to the other two.

whats most important to the longevity of the 5R is the tune. So why not try out hardened input shaft and servos before swapping the whole transmission? It would only be about 350.00 investment for those parts that can be installed easily yourself. Also the added benefit is the 5R is better for DD. Which is also the reason i myself stuck with it. I will go to the track maybe 2 times a year, and drive my car everyday.

IIRC - The JDM cars went thru a many more transmissions than was broadcast publicly. they blue car they had running fast back in 06 or so was local to me, I spoke to the guy a couple times, he relayed the issue to me IIRC

I should be at or above 550rwhp soon and plan on sticking with the 5R, at least until if it breaks. I pretty much have set it up like JDM's were, so will see how long it last.

Running a 5R but have the hardened input shaft, PA deep pan, JDM catch can, upgraded servo's and a PTC TQ.

From what I have read/heard heat is what kills the tranny's and adding the deep pan with additional fluid helps out a lot.

Ohh i see.... I remember somewhere that they did break several transmission until they dialed in the transmission tune and raced with that tune with great success.

Greg is correct regarding the heat. The deep man is very important but for DD, i hear that thing sits very low.

It does not sit any lower the the Kooks LT's/H pipe....so as long as the exhaust does not rub/hit the PA pan will be fine and I am CJ springs which lower the car approx 3/4 of an inch.

Based on my trap speed and est weight I should be around 750-800 hp....as far as being a DD...no, it is driven on nice days once a week.

The 5R survived 10-12 passes at a track rental in Apr, fingers crossed it lives through the next track day Oct 12.

I do have a 4R carcass sitting in my shed to be built if and when the 5R dies....not looking forward to that day as the 4R has to be shifted manually and you lose the OD...the stock shifter has to be changed, etc....it's not as easy as swapping tranny's and if I remember correctly the computer has to be altered as well.

I'm using a full-automatic valve body, with separate controller, for full automatic operation. Or I can shift it manually, or even use a paddle shifter. And recently, I did put in a different shifter, although the stock one was 'working', just that it was already sloppy (even with the 5r55s), so it was not easy to tell which gear you were in. As far as o/d, it's there as well. And like the 5r55s, it can be switched off.
The pcm needs to be reflashed or replaced (I'm now using a manual pcm). And there's a few minor wiring things.

And dont forget the driveshaft and torque converter.

So it's not a "simple swap", but it's not that bad.
