In case anyone was wondering, this is what broke:

This is not one I would use in a performance rebuild, which is the reason I had it available. Notice the undercut after the splines on the small end. This is where the stock, old versions break. One the newer versions the splines extend into the shaft and there is no undercut. Oh, there's some hand pron for ya!

This is a picture of the direct drum, nestled in the ring gear which is connected to the output shaft. Notice the circle, this is where the stub shaft's small end fits in the direct drum. The direct drum applies to give 3rd gear.

This is a picture of the forward drum, the input shaft is attached to it. If you notice the circle, this is where the big end of the stub shaft fits. The forward drum applies to give you 1st gear and holds until overdrive where it releases as the O/D band applies. Without the stub shaft, you no havie 3rd or 4th.

At the last minute, I found this photo of the newer (OEM) upgraded stub shaft without the undercut at the splines. Note the circle, the undercut shafts should always be replaced above ~350hp and the version pictured below is good for ~600hp. Above that, you need an aftermarket 300M shaft, which is probably what Ron broke. When an aftermarket shaft breaks, it normally happens below the big end.

Sorry for the thread jack, Ron. I just figured I'd share a bit and give some insight into what actually happened, since I had the parts/photos available.

Good deal.. If you look at this thread below, you can see what they had to do to get to it. It it almost the last thing, beside the direct drum and output shaft. Luckily, unstacking the trans doesn't take long at all. If you look at pic #7, that is where the stub goes. I didn't get pics of the forward durm going in, only instaled but you guys get the idea.

That way Ron can pick it up at his leisure. in the interim I'll make sure it's all squared away for him!

I had a feeling it would be the stub shaft with the immediate loss of 3 and 4, it's a small sucker. Good deal, it is getting fixed!
Broken one of those before. On the last qualifying pass too. Luckily....it rained like a sumbitch on Sunday morning so eliminations were moved to the next race and I had time to get the 4R fixed. Runner-up at the make up eliminations too.

Just one more thing.....Ron....whatever you do.......don't you ever lay a finger on my car you ill-fated/bad-luck-carrying/jinxed-by-a-voodoo-priestess motherfucker!

Damn dude. Just.....damn.

I'd like to joke too but I'm starting to think my car has "bad juju" as well. Though, it may just be my bad luck rubbing off on this poor car...
