Stock brake pads

I was replacing my stock brake pads & had an issue with one of the new pads.
One of the springs came off & will not stay secure when I re installed it.
The old pads had these springs as do the new ones.
What purpose do these springs serve?
Are they really needed once the pads are installed back in the calliper & mounted on the rotor.
Any info or experience would be appreciated.

^I would be interested in knowing too. I replaced mine and one of the springs flew off. I reattached it by crimpint it tighter using a set of pliers. It worked and I have not had any issues. Going on 6 months now, but I am curious. Lets see what the gurus say.

It just helps hold the pad in place in the caliper during installation.
