This may be a stupid question, but are these 3v mustang heads or 3v truck heads? This is a sweet build and I'm in for the results. Keep up the great work and props for tackling this stuff by yourself. Seems very intimidating.

The heads are the same but they did come off a Mustang. I think the cams are a lil different but im keeping my hot rod cams for now anyway. Im working some stuff out for a turbo or maybe twins. But that'll take a little longer since I gotta get a fuel system and injectors

maybe i missed it, but what kinda $ did the 5.4 cost you and did you buy it as a short or long block. i'm looking around locally for a 5.4 (preferably a longblock just so i have spares of the heads, cams, springs, etc, just in case...) and all i can find is 5.4's from dismantling shops and they're charging $3500 to $4500 (which seems a little pricey for a used stock 5.4).

also, what's the compression in the 5.4's with stock 3v heads?

edit: ok, nm on the price lol. i guess i should've read the first post in its entirety. any idea on compression though?

Yea 3500 is crazy. Check craigslist for a triton motor (2005ish f150)

Im running forged GT500 pistons so my compression is going to be aroun 8.5 IIRC. Its a little higher than a gt500 since its a 3v and not 4v. The trion motor still has a 9.8 compression ratio.

On that compressor, does it just fit between a cam lobe and use the cam as a pivot point and the two long forks as leverage by resting on the valve cover surface of the head while you screw down the compressor?

Ok, I made one that works similar to that and I just use some steel flat bar like 1/4" thick as a shim under the forks that rest on the valve cover to allow the compressor to push the spring down further.

So I finally got the valve spring compressor working after I Pmed the guy who let me borrow them. The head under the knob is adjustable and needs to be unscrewed some to give it a little more height to compressor the spring. Here's the quick process. The heads are off the car btw so its much easier.

First put the base of the tool in above the spring you wish to compress. The forks go between the cam lobes and rest all the way across to the surface of the head

Here is the head that needs to be unscrewed some. Take it all the way up till it almost comes off

Position the foot of the compressor like so. Make sure no part of the foot is on the retainer or the valve will go down too defeating the purpose. Also make sure you're at an angle to not get stuck in the head. Put the knob on the head and tighten a little to keep the foot from moving all over the place but loose enough where you can move it by hand.

Tighten the knob down to compress the spring. Once the retainer clears the keepers you will see them become loose. Some will kind of fall over. Use a handy magnet to take the retainer out. Its a small space even for my small fingers.

Here's with the keepers completely out. Now just unscrew the knob slowly. Put your hand on top so it doesnt go flying off because of the spring tension.

Remove the tool then remove the spring!

Here's a comparison. High load beehive spring and comp retainer on the bottom. Oem on top.

Glad you got it working. Now other people have documentation on how to use this tool if needed.

Box of goodies came in today. Modmax stainless steel rings, king hp rod and main bearings, arp 2000 rod bolts, arp main bolts, all the gaskets and new valve seals.

Made up my mind that I will be doing some twins although that part may take a little while longer since I need some injectors, fuel pump and maf. It'll be a custom set up and I already have something up my sleeve for it.

Picked up a pypes o/r h pipe to choose and weld wider for the motor. Longtubes will be coming off and sold.

What do you guys think about under drive pullies with a turbo? I know they work unlike a supercharger but I feel the minimal gain isn't worth it if I went with turbos. I already have a set of steedas here but I could just sell them.

Just went by the Dodge dealership to pick up something for my old Durango, and saw a new Challenger model with the name "Yellow Jacket" plastered all over it. You may want to change the name of your project! :chairfall:
