No oem built vehicle will have breathers for emissions reasons.

A cobra jet doesn't have to meet emissions

The cobra jet is still a oe ford vehicle. You can't order a vehicle from a manufacturer without it meeting certain emmissions standards, it would be illegal for them to sell otherwise. Hence you wont see a vehicle sold from any manufacturer with a breather setup.

Does it run catalitic converters?

You want to have vacuum on the engine to help the piston rings set.

Piston Rings need engine vaccum to seat properly and running breathers kills the vaccum. Yes you get vacuum on the manifold but not on the crankcase.

This is my point of view and only my point of view. I have noticed that almost all cars that consume oil have one of these two things: 1. Breathers, 2. Were broken in like a baby, doing a soft break-in(going soft for 1k miles for example).

I firmly believe that engine break-in is done under 20 minutes. Thats how all the top performance auto makers break-in their cars. 3 50% throttle runs up to 60% rpm range on 2nd or 3rd gear and letting the engine brake by itself (creating crankcase vacuum), then 3 75% throttle runs up to 80% rpm and braking with the engine. Last run is 100% and letting the engine brake, change oil and lets go.

With all that being said, what way would you suggest as far as pulling vacuum. Since I can't run the pcv from the valve cover to the intake, where could I pull vac without blowing boost into the crankcase?

You can blow boost to the crankcase. Remember when it is blowing boost to the crank case the manifold is pressurized as well. The volume of the crankcase is kept at around the same # during an engine rotation so it won't suddenly pressurize more than the manifold. Even if that was the case, the boost will not enter the crankcase and go back into the intake and into the manifold. I would keep the stock system route and only replace it with bigger hoses and fittings. You can buy them at any pepboys, autozone, advanced auto parts. Instead of a catch can I would run an air/oil separator.

+1 I had excessive blow by on an engine and kept blowing the front timing cover seal. Proper ventilation, breathers or PCV whichever you choose, for your engine is very important.

Yeah...the more I think about that, the worse that sounds. Pressurizing the crank case with boost results in the exact OPPOSITE of what you're trying to achieve with crank case ventilation!

When my piston went, I pressurized my crank case......blew the breather off my breather tank and oil went everywhere......pressure couldn't get out of the breather tank fast enough...I've heard of others blowing the VCT gaskets right out of the valve covers.

I'm still running the pcv. I bought a ball type pcv valve and put it in the hose between drivers side valve cover and intake manifold. The stock pcv is still in the valve cover too. This is the same setup vortech and paxton use.

My limited experience has been that the motor runs better (fuel trims are more stable) with vacuum on the crankcase. During boost crankcase pressure can still go out the passenger side. FWIW Procharger instructions have you completely block off the drivers side of the pcv, leaving only the passenger side for ventillation.

I'm pro pcv. Your mileage may vary.

Thats Why you need to run bigger lines. I have done my research and I will still have my point of view, I know how notorious this forum is when someone has a different opinion. Everyone can do to their engine whatever they want, all I ask is if you are going to do something do the research first and no a forum topic doesn't quite cut it unless it actually has some real tech not just someones opinion or a shop's opinion where the guy doesn't have any engeneering background.

i have the ceph-3 pump with the racetronics harness. this was going to be setup on my gtp, but i sold it before i got around to installing it. im thinking bout using this setup on my current build.

You have no idea what my set up is or how big my lines are so how do you know I need bigger lines?

I have 3 #10 lines coming from the valve covers, going to a tank that is capped off, with a 4th #10 line feeding to a delco vac pump....

When my piston went , it pressurized my crank case with 16psi, with the vac pump already pulling....it still popped my cap off the breather tank and forced oil out....

That's not something heard somewhere, that's something that happened to me. How much pressure are you currently pushing into your motor ?

I'm not saying breathers are the correct way, I don't run breathers. But pressurizing the top of the piston AND the bottom of the piston at the same time.....well.....I know that's not correct either....

I may investigate putting a check valve in line like Bruce suggested.

In the past I also tried using the turbo suction from in front of the turbo after the filter....that worked well but I could never keep the oil from making its way into the turbo, not a good enough catch can I guess.

From what I have seen a turbo setup(knock knock thats what this particular thread is about anyway) will pull the pull the air fast enough that it makes it almost impossible for a seperator to get all the oil vapor out of the air and keep it out of the turbo/coldside/ maf and into the intake and so on. This is one area where following KISS and using breathers works out really well for a turbo car. Breathers, cheapest and easiest route and it works, dont have to worry about oil getting in period, adding a tank or a tank to drain and a bunch of extra lines/fittings or a check valve, yadda yadda. One thing for sure though is this thought that you continously need vacuum to "seat the rings" lol... on a boosted setup on our cars is just not so. I have had breathers on my car for 4 years, ran them when I was na as well. But just like everything for our cars different strokes for different folks and any number of setups can get the job done and we will still continue to beat the dead horse about it.

I just redid my breather, PCV setup and so far I'm very happy with the results. I previously ran both covers to breather cans and just got tired of the oil smells, plus my engine is set up very loose, so I have a lot of blowby and needed more breather capacity at wot.

I had bungs welded into a set of cam covers and I am running #10 lines from each cover to a breather catch can on each side. I have also installed a Krankvent pcv fitting in the driver side line, which allows air out but not in. I am running a line from the stock vent to an oil catch can, with another Krankvent, then to the intake manifold.

This setup gives me plenty of breather capacity at wot and still uses the engine vacuum, to pull the fumes into the intake, at normal engine speeds. I don't have anymore oil smell during normal driving and I am very happy with the setup.

Just something for you to consider down the road, if you have the oil smell problem and want to get rid of it.
