For alot of people that have been asking the proper method, before welding anything the rear end needs to be put in a jig and made certain that it is straight and all brackets are aligned and true. Then weld the tubes and I recommend welding some sort of structure supports coming from the center section to the shock mounts.

would love to do this now since I have the rearend out of my car. would need to know the size of the bolts length and thread size. also did you put four on each side, basically quartering up the circumference?

The bolts are Grade 8 and they are put in direct shear with the tubes. It takes an enormous amount of pressure to strip these in direct shear.

Well I've been on the fence about how to reinforce my rear end, so almost on a whim, I welded my tubes the other night. I had the rear out for a gear install, had my welder out, so I cleaned it up and went to it. I didn't put it in a jig, or anything. I supported the housing in several different spots, hit the seam with a wire wheel, cleaned off a grounding spot, and welded it up. I welded the relocation brackets as well. By all measurements and visual inspection, it's still straight as can be, and I am 100% confident in it's strength.

I twisted mine out of the pumpkin but not quite that bad. There is a chassis shop near me that has a jig. Cost me $500 and he straightened everything and welded from the inside and outside. The inside of pumpkin welding is supposed to be recommended method for most strength according to him and a few threads I've found online. Welding the outside is still good but apparently doing from inside is even better.

I looked pretty heavily at the inside and decided I didn't want the cleanup work involved (both pre welding and post welding). But I can see it can be done reasonably easily.

Fuck welding inside lol. You can weld that without a jig. I've used the jig before and they never move so I just quit using it.

Yea the chassis guy I took it to jigged it and welded inside and out. Welded lca relocation brackets, Uca bracket and beefed up lca brackets that are on chassis side. Also set all control arms to right lengths and angles. I say $500 well spent
