Ideally.....you'd want to take them to a poweder coater. Wheels get exposed to alot of abuse. Road debris...washing chemicals etc.

I'd go that route if you have one local to you.

Powdercoating is nice, but I've seen so many crappy jobs with them doing rims. I've used duplicolor wheel coating a few times (or it's called something like that) and have been very happy with it.

Just did mine last week (bronze)

rattlecan paint doesn't last too long on wheels, I did that and put several coats
of clear over the color. Couple years later, they had a million little rock chips.
Can you find an epoxy paint? 2 component mix is really tough stuff, approaching
powdercoat durability.

what paint did you use? how did you prep the wheels? No matter what you use, a job is only as good as the prep underneath

I have a couple friends' sets I painted years ago that are still in great shape. Also (on a different but most expensive route) We have wheels painted professionally from the shop I work at that look as perfect today as the day we painted them years ago.

My GT500 wheels in my sig picture are just painted. And they have been fine so far through this harsh winter and about 5,000 miles of driving

I just painting my wheels back in November. They came out so well people are always asking me where I got them powder coating (they're not). I chose to spray them because 1. they're stock wheels, nothing fancy, 2. It is waaay cheaper to spray, but you will use a lot of elbow grease to get the job done right and 3. They're a lot easier to touch up if need be. I have to look at what I brand cans I used later today.

TIP: Take your time and sand the wheels down good to get the clearcoat off. Also use primer. Do the job right and it will come out really good.

I'd say the opposite, get a scuffpad (Scotch Red or Gray pad). Scuff the clear well so everything's dull, and there's no shine, but not totally through.
If you go all the way through the clearcoat then it would really need an epoxy prime.

I thought of going with this method also but just some regular fine grit sand paper I had lying around did a great job for me. It did not sand to the bare metal of the rim. It just scuffed up the clear coat. Then once I sprayed a good coat of primer and let it dry there were no imperfections on the wheels. The rims were smooth as butter. I shoulda took pics damnit...
