Which pads for road course???

So I am thinking I am going to drive to Vegas from the Westcoast of Canada for the 50th anniversary party and, more importantly, the road course event. So I need to start prepping the car now. I have run Pacific Raceways in Seattle 4 times with slotted rotors and Hawk HP Plus pads.

Problem is, those pads eat rotors. I basically trash a set after about an hour of track time. Seattle is pretty hard on braking from what I am told. So I want to run pads that will withstand the severe braking yet not destroy the rotors.

Advice please.

Oh, car is a 2005 GT, stock motor with some suspension upgrades. SS brake lines, Motul 600 fluid and front brake ducts.

Thanks

Are you using the GT500 4 pot brembos? I've found that the stock 14" rotors with hp plus pads stops pretty well and seem to last many trackdays for me. I have brake cooling and high temp fluids and haven't had any problems with brake fade or exceptional rotor wear. When i went to the HT-10 pads it seemed like the rotors evaporated very quickly. Chances are good that you're braking harder than me, but I wonder if the problem isn't with your rotors or calipers, rather than the pads.

I am running factory calipers and slotted rotors (stock size). I have never had a problem with brake fade and the car is very impressive IMO with a stock size brake set up. Problem is come the last 20 minute session, the rotors are starting to growl. It sounds terrible. If you look at the rotors, they appear to have "smeared". It looks like they melted a little. There is a pattern of smearing to coincides with the venting ports in the rotor.

I've been running the stock 4 post brembo's on my 13' GT with Hawk HPS front and back and have had no issues. I'll eat through probably 50% of them at a track weekend and then they'll hold up 6 more months of DDing and then I swap them out for new ones before my next track event.

I'm not sure about the 2005 calipers/rotors though.

I ran HPS brakes the first time on a road course and they were trashed. Too soft for that kind of punishment. I am reaching speeds of 136 mph going into hard braking zones at Pacific Raceways.

DTC60 all the way around, Motul RBF600 fluid and ducts will have you sorted. Change the pads and rotors at the track.

IMHO you should run track only pads and swap them out when you head to the track, unless you only plan to go once or twice. Raybestos ST-43, Carbotech XP12/16, Hawk DTC-60, Performance Friction race compounds, and some others are all great choices.

Many people like the Carbotechs. I prefer the Raybestos ST-43 for their longevity in comparison to the Carbotechs. Can't go wrong with any of them really.

I've had good results with the Carbotech XP12/10 and Hawk DTC 70/60 pads. Motul RBF600 is excellent fluid, but it's very hygroscopic (moisture-absorbing) so you have to change it more often; I've been using ATE Super Gold or Blue DOT 4. Also recommend going with stainless steel brake lines.

Yea, I change the fluid often, not cheap at $20 a bottle! I have the brake ducts and I think I am going to go with the Carbotech XP 12/10 for the next set up. Yes, I change the pads before and after an event at the track or hotel. If I go to Vegas, that is a long drive from western Canada for race pads!! It will be street pads for that length of drive.

I was hitting the same speeds at MSR Cresson going into the Rattlesnake and coming off of Slingshot into Little Bend. Sessions were only 20-25 minutes each though, I'm not sure how long you were pushing them.

My dad also used them on his Z06 for several track weekends with the same treatment.

They held up perfectly fine for both of us. /shrug

I hear ya there! the only reason i know my top speed is from my GPS and playing back the in car video.

What gears do you run? I am doing 136 in 4th gear, i go slower in 5th.

Carbotech XP10/Bobcats hear. Upgrading to XP12/XP10 this season. Road America is hard on brakes slowing down from 140 to 70 going into turn 2 & 5 is a killer.

last fall at Pacific Raceways, I tried DTC-70/DTC-60 on the front and rear. I really liked this setup on my car. Just before diving on the brakes while approaching turn 2, I can exceed 170 if I'm really pushing it. I have brake cooling front and rear which helps a lot. The pads seem to be easy on rotors and fade was minimal.

Thanks Marc, nice to hear from someone familiar with that track. Yes, you are friggin booking it into turn 2! Do you have stock dia brake rotors on that car?
