whipple HO pinging...suggestions

I just had a whipple HO kit installed on my 06 GT with 36000 mi on it. I am having issues with pinging mostly under 3k rpm. Very noticeable when accelerating hard but happens also under fairly light throttle. I use 93 octane like recommended (obviously). Any ideas on what the problem may be? Ford tech line said this isn't usually an issue with these kits.

Check the tune. If you didn't get a custom tune I would recommend getting your car to the dyno to see what is going on.

Using the ford tune that came with the kit which Ford says should not be an issue...I will need to buy another hand held if I get it dyno tuned correct? (Ford Pro Cal sucks!)... any other ideas anyone?

If everything is working properly you shouldn't need to have it retuned. Any good dyno shop should be able to datalog what is happening and point you in the right direction.
If I had to guess you have a fuel delivery problem.
Who installed the kit?

local Ford dealer. Install looks good and the guy doing the work seems to really know what he's doing

I will not be much help, but it does sound like it is in the tune, as mentioned above; I would get it to shop that has a dyno and get it checked out before you hurt your car. I ran the ford tune for two months and it ran fine - just not as good as the custom SCT tune.:thumb2:

does the whipple kit come with new plugs? pinging like that sounds like sparkplugs or tune.

do you have a 5 speed? If you do its probably the metal plate rattling that is inbetween the block and trans. I had the same issue and thought it was pinging

#1 - are you sure it's 'pinging'? I ask because a lot of guys think some things are actually others.

What specifically does it sound like and where does it sound like it's coming from?

If it's truly pinging, it will sound like tiny little rocks hitting your windshield. Is this what you here? Or do you here 'popping' that sounds as though it's coming from the exhaust?

make sure there are no air leaks
in the air intake system....

you may also want to verify that the
pulley you are using is the correct one,
and not smaller than what is appropriate.

Had tech who installed it listen to it. It is definitely pinging. Tried 100 octane gas and just put some fuel system cleaner in (Techron) to try and clear the carbon out ...if that doesn't work I'm going to take it back to Ford and let them fiqure it out. Paid 6400 for the kit from Ford...shouldn't have any issues! Does seem like it is the tune though.

Did you get upgraded larger fuel injectors? You need 39-40lb/hr injectors and not the stock ones.

If the above is the case, then you're running lean and you're going to damage that engine from the knock. 3V engines can't tolerate knock.

Definitely get it custom tuned on a dyno.

If the dealership is going to charge you, I would just bring it to a dyno shop and let them check it out. They can put it on a dyno, data log it, and check the A/F ratio. Sounds like the tune to me.

will see ...if the dealer is going to charge for it I will take it elsewhere. I did have a lot of build up on the old intake (charge motion plates were coated with carbon/soot) so I am going to give the "Tekron" a shot first. Definitely need to get a filter setup on the PCV system to prevent getting oil into the new stuff...what a mess.

If it is pinging, you are running way too much timing. Datalog your timing, along with your knock sensor activity. Ask your tuner what total timing is at WOT.

Also, a real easy way to determine if its pinging is like you said---just add 100 octane gas. If the pinging goes away, thats your problem. If its still there, then it may be the plate between the block and trans rattling.
