Why is a Mustang female?

Hi all,
sorry if my question seams stupid to you - but I´m no native speaker... Why do you speak about your Mustangs as "she", using a femail personal pronoun. Thought it would be rather masculin and "he" or neutral as "it". Is there a special reason?

most people refer to cars, not just mustangs, as "she", same with boats/ships, etc

Referring to a hot rod as “SHE” is not universal. I think of my Mustang as a Beast.

My GT is called Scarlett. Don't ask why!
I guess giving our Mustangs female names started back in the 60s when every one called theirs Sally!
