I have a similar set-up with a Darrin 4R and a Circle D converter. Both have been in the car for almost three years and a TON of passes with zero problems or maintenance. Up until now I've made all the passes fully automatic. I.E. I put it in "D", foot brake it, launch it and just steer down the track and let the EEC do all of the shifting. I now want to go to a manual valve body and Darrin sent me here to look over this write-up to get info on the shifter install. Great article on the 4R install BTW!
Sifting through I didn't see what specific B&M shifter it was you were using. I was considering this one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-81001/ which is the only one listed that says it's compatible with my year car. But doesn't list the 4R transmission, weirdly enough. 4R is such a step-child.
At some point I may want to go to an air shifter. Are there any out there that could be upgraded to air?
Any help/advice would be appreciated. Again, great write-up.

You can use that shifter but I used this one

In the future as you look for parts and shifters you can replace the word 4R70W with AODE and it will help you in your search. Darrin would argue because of the finer points but a 4R70 is nothing but a refined AODE and every shifter that will fit an AODE will work on a 4R70. For that matter so will every AOD shifter if you are going manual valve body as the only difference in the shifter is one has an O/D position and the other does not. All you need is 3 forward gears, and the O/D if you choose to add it, will be done with the flip of a switch. The reason I buy the AODE of the two is because it comes with more part for shifter linkage mounting.

ready for a dumb question....

what is the little red bar for in the front of the shifter for?, do you have to pull that up to put it in reverse?

I ran a ratchet shifter years ago on a camaro and it didnt have this, i just see it on a lot of these and cant figure out what it is for.

yes its reverse lock out. Perhaps you had a lever, or a button to depress...but basically it stops you from un-intentionally putting it in reverse and park when moving in the forward pattern.123(RP)>

That is the same shifter I have. I like it. My stock cable is in a little bit of a bind and it only works perfect when shifting foward tho. I think a new cable and working it to be a softer bend will do the trick. The cable on a stock 5r55 comes out the front of the shifter where the b&m for the aode comes out the rear.

maybe thats why I chose the B&M ratchet...it too goes out the front..

I have a TCI Outlaw shifter with 3 speed forward pattern and the line lock button upgrade. I like it but I think I would like a ratchet shifter better on the street.

Thanks for all the info gentlemen! I have another question. I lock-up my converter on my passes. Is there a handle replacement for any of the recommended shifters that integrates a converter lock-up switch so I wouldn't need to reach around looking for that switch at 140mph?

I talked to a couple of my local experts and decided to try the TCI Outlaw. I'll let everyone knows how it sorts-out. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TCI-616531/
BTW, Darrin just went through my 4R that was built over three years ago. He swears everything looks like new in it. Same with Chris at Circle-D with the lock-up converter. I actually picked the new converter up from him in Houston last week. I has the upgrades he wanted to make for the lock-up/Trans-brake/manual valve body PLUS additional power combination I'm going to now. The old converter was still pristine. I know, I saw it. Both of these companies really have their act together. I don't know how many passes I've made, locking up that converter in Darrin's 4R. But running low 9s at 152, obviously, they were still working. Now we'll see what happens with the lock-up, trans-brake, manual valve body and going from the T-Trim to the JT Trim Vortech. I just can't leave well enough alone. The upgrade will be covered in an article in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords in a couple of months, so no results to be divulged until then, but it should be interesting. Track testing of the new tranny and the old T-Trim to happen at a MMFF track rental in Gainesville on Monday. Fingers crossed for the first 8-sec slip. LOTS of work to be done this weekend!
