Seems like what happened to me. Had two pistons gone and 2 rods shattered.

i ran a magnet quickly through the oil. picked up extremely small amount of metal, not even enough to cover the magnet head, which is about 1/8 the size of a penny

They sure do. Most other methods of cutting an oil filter open, result in introducing too many contaminates into the filter. When your done cutting the filter open, you have no idea what you're looking at - debris in the oil filter or contaminates you just introduced cutting the filter open. Not to mention using anything other than a filter cutter usually results in unnecessary lacerations to your hands & fingers.

Cant remove the tranny, as the converter is bolted to the flexplate. The only way i see removal is to literally pull the engine and converter together. it sounds dangerous

How will you separate them out of the car? If the motor won't turn, doesn't that mean your can't turn the torque converter to hit all the bolts?

Once the engine and transmission are out of the vehicle, unbolt the transmission from the engine - leaving the T/C bolted to the flex plate. Once the transmission is out of the way, you can unbolt the T/C from the flex plate.
