Once the engine and transmission are out of the vehicle, unbolt the transmission from the engine - leaving the T/C bolted to the flex plate. Once the transmission is out of the way, you can unbolt the T/C from the flex plate.

I dont think i have the ceiling height to pull the engine and trans together. I can barely pull the motor out, and even then i had to remove the oil pan for clearance last time. That was with the front wheels off, and the car lowered on jacks as far down as i could possibly get it.

I was told that i should be able to jack the transmission up so its perfectly level with engine and pull the engine forward and the converter should come with it

Possibly...

with the pan off you may have enough fore & aft clearance to slide the engine forward enough to get the T/C snout out of the trans pump. Be VERY carefull when doing this so as not to fuck up the transmission pump!!

If that doesn't work you could always drop the K-Member

that i DEFINITIVELY do not have the height in the garage for. that's what I wanted to do originally. It would make life so easy. I think i would have to pull heads in the car first, to be able to get the car high enough that when i lower k member i could slide it out from under the car. Im gonig to have to do quite a bit of measuring

Can you put in the driveway long enough to pull the motor. I had to do that when I was working on my motor so many years ago.

Actually the car fell on me doing that when a cheap ass jack stand folded on me. Hmmm, be carefull...

Just keep in mind the entire time your removing it, if it were easy any Pansie ass over at TMS could do it. Bet you won't see any threads like this over there.

Thanks man. And that is the truth. Ive pulled and swapped this motor before, its not hard, and if the damn engine would just turn, it would be a cinch.

Luckily I was skinny then and it was a Pinto. Even with the 351 in it, it only weighed 2700lbs. I was lucky enough to be in the right spot when it came down. A couple inches in direction and I'd have been hurt really bad or dead. It hurt enough even so.

Maybe a dumb idea, but can you jack up the back of the car enough to slightly change the angle, making it easier to get the engine/transmission out without hitting the ceiling?

not dumb at all, and I already do something similar by lwoering the front end way down. The problem you will run into is the angle of the trans if you jack up the rear end.

Do you have an adjustable spreader bar on your engine hoist? If you do you can surely pull the engine and trans together, adjust the angle as you are lifting and pulling it forward.

I have an engine leveler. I think that is the same no? Even with the leveler, the flexplate BARELY makes it over the area where the radiator and frame support is. IDK that i could get the trans over that.

You can pick up a motor bar that connects to the shock towers and block to hold the motor up while lowering the K member.

IIRC they are about $70 from harbor freight.

What if you back the car into the garage so that the front is just clear enough to give you the height you need. That way the driveway angel would only be on the engine hoist not the car.

Earl that is a genius idea. I did not even think about that. There is one problem. The car is facing the other way, and without it being powered on its own, Im gonig to need manpower to move it. I think i can manage it if i can get 3 or 4 guys together, with 1 steering. Thank you!

I have driveway drains there, but i think i can cover them, or get some plywood and lay it down to give an even rolling surface to the cherry picker.
