So i got my car back yesterday. New stroker 302, BBR stage 2 cams, Saleen SC 3,0 pulley etc etc. Due to the complexity of the build took it into a local speed shop. Shop says that the tune some work but everything mechcanical checks out. It start up and idles and sounds pretty damn good. http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff422/wiggywigton/20130624_082113_zps6c43e84e.mp4 So i drive it home. On the way home it has trouble making power above 2200 rpms. I get it just about all the way home it starts to shutter and it dies at an intersection. It restarts and i get it home. Once home i shut it off to run inside to get the SCT. Hook up the SCT and start a datalog. It has trouble restarting but starts. Drive it about 100 feet dies and wont restart.
This morning I tried it again and it wont start and even backfires through the exhaust. Shut it off and call the shop to come pick it up.
I have checked all the normal things..MAF sparkplugs...all the connections seemed to be in order. I called Brenspeed and they think it is something mechanical. The more i think about it it sounds like timing.
Is it possible to get off a tooth on one cam? Just enough where 4 cylinders run but the others are off just a hair?

I am not a pro so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I remember when I had my car built and tuned.
When I left the shop all seemed well drove about 300 miles that day.
When I tried to start it the next morning-no go!!!!
I was 1500ish miles from home and was starting to panic.
The shop didn't have alot of cold start opportunities to adjust the tune for that situation.

Anyway
Don't Panic!
A simple phone call to the shop straightened things out and I got on my way.

If your car wasn't tuned correctly to begin with, I'm hoping its the same sort of condition.
Did it ever have power above 2200rpm on the way home?

I would try reloading the tune and see what happens. If issues persist, have the shop deal with it.

If it drive find initially, I doubt the cam/engine timing is off.
If it is off, it should have been off from the start.

I am tempted to say its tuning.

I wouldnt say it drove fine initially..i drove but left some to be desired.
They came and picked up the car. It trys to start but doesnt fully. After attempting 3 times it backfires. It definately sounds like a timming issue. Could be a bad cam sensor?
Got to me something simple...I hope...

It could be alot of things. The main concern for me would be a leaky head gasket or something similar that is affecting the combustion slowly over time. It's almost impossible to inadvertantly screw up putting a head on though. The motor sounds right in your video.

I dont think it is a head gasket. No smoke.

This was the first modular build for the shop. Theyll figure it out hopefully in the next day or two.

Well the bad luck continues....

I am not sure how this happened but the dowel pin on the passenger side cam wallowed loose and the cam gear spring assembly broke taking a small chunk of the end of the cam with it.

Good news is that I don't have to pay for it. Bad news is the cam is toast. So now the waiting game continues.

One head is off again. Doesn't look like any other damage other than to the end of the cam and the sproket. Should be a "easy" fix. New cam and sproket. New gasket, zip it all back together and back in business.
I am so glad I decided to pay someone to do this. I would have been in over my head...

It sounds like they didn't properly torque the parts. Glad it's nothing major.

So I guess they are going to pull the other valve cover and retorque the other side as well? Never enough time to do it right, always enough time to do it over.

First modular build would have me wanting it built somewhere else that is familiar with the modular engines. At lease they are taking care of you..

Well i didnt have many options. Looking back I wish I would have just eaten the shipping costs and sent it to either 281 Motorsports or Brenspeed.
Oh well. There always has to be a first. At least they are taking care of me. Great customer service...

Glad to hear they are taking care of you...sounds like they are standing behind what they did, even though it's their first modular build.
