Anybody having issues grinding second gear? I have had this transmission for about 1.5 years and take it to the drag strip a couple times a year. The past few times I never know if it's going to go into second gear or just grind. I initially filled it with regular ATF, then went to Mobil 1 ATF. Didn't really like that so I went back to ATF and now I am using Pennzoil Synchromesh which is the smoothest and easiest shifting of all of the oils that I have used, but it still grinds.
You may have broken the syncros. Try sitting with the car idling and try to push the shifter into second gear without using the clutch. If it locks you out then it's fine, if it grinds then the syncros are bad. Try it again with third and see what happens.

At least this is the diagnostic method for the MT-82. I assume it works the same with the T56.

Weird, did I read somewhere that the early transmissions had 2nd gear syncro issues?

How many miles have you put on it?

I'm now running Royal Purple's ATF syncromesh type fluid...its definitely better than Mobil 1.

I have about 7000 on the transmission and 30 passes at the track. I wouldn't consider it an early transmission since it was brand new and professionally installed in April 2013.

Thanks. I'll try that tonight. It's just strange. It drives fine with spirited driving on the street. Throw some DRs on it and it is hit or miss. So frustrating. I am running 11.09 at the track and should be able to easily break into the 10s if I could just shift this thing.

Tried putting it in second and third while idling like you said. It wouldn't let me in gear and no noises.

Sorry to hear about your XL issues. I would call Brad and Liberty to see what he thinks it may be. I just got my XL back from them and its perfect.

Called Tremec and plan on calling Liberty later today. Tremec is convinced it is a clutch issue hanging up in the first to second shift. I have a twin disc ACT clutch and the braided hose. I will try and bleed it tonight and see if that helps. He said that the second disk can get hung up on input shaft as well.

Gerald, I would take out the RP and put the Mobile 1 back in.

The guy I sold my TR3650 to for parts is a local tranny overhauler, and he always asks folks what fluid they run.

He told me that Synchromesh and M1 are both fine, but he showed me some synchro cones that came out of another 3650 and the little carbon-fiber friction pads were trashed or missing. He believes the Royal Purple fluid eats away at the glue that holds the carbon fiber friction material on.

To drive his point home, he grabbed some synchros that he had just parts-washed and showed me so I could see the carnage myself.

Anyway, I'm not one to disparage products normally, and I know RP makes some great stuff (oils, etc.) but I would not touch their tranny fluid in a Tremec based on what I was told and saw with my own two eyes.

Just my .02.

His name is Stan and here is his website if you want to speak with him. If you do, please post back up and let us know what he says:

www.T5Atlanta.com

Edit:

I swear Stan told me RP was the one that ate the rings...but my memory may have failed me...read this. I found this on a forum where Stan stated the following about Amsoil:

Now, other fluids that people use and swear by are:

Royal Purple SynchroMax
GM SynchroMesh
Pennzoil SynchroMesh

There are others, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Some folks really like the Amsoil ATF product for T-5s, but I have my reservations about this. Tremec, the current manufacturer of the T-5, is saying not to use synthetic fluids in their transmissions because some synthetic fluids will break down the synchro ring linings. I recently rebuilt a Mustang T-5 that the owner was proud to have ONLY used the Amsoil ATF in since it was new. This transmission was AMAZINGLY CLEAN, but the fabric synchro linings had come un-glued from the rings! I believe that Amsoil may be one of the fluids that Tremec was warning us about!

Anyway, Gerald...I'd give Stan a call about your RP usage or just go back to M1 and not worry about it.

^ Shane, Tremec now recommends (requires) synthetic ATF in their transmissions. You have the sticker on your T56 Magnum stating such. That said, the Pennzoil Syncromesh was the smoothest, best shifting fluid I've used in any of my four Mustang manual transmissions.

I think he missed the ATF part. I did anyway, until I read my response about how he would hate it in the cold. Then I realized he was talking about ATF, not the syncromesh gear oil.

I agree with Skwerl. When I called Tremec about my issue I asked him what fluid he recommended and he said Pennzoil Synchromesh. I have tried Mobil 1 and regular ATF and the Synchromesh has been the smoothest.

Hmm, I use the Amsoil trans fluid and haven't had any issue with it. I hope it stays that way.

Mines had Mobil 1 in it since new. Changed it out once shortly after getting it.

Other then that initial first few throws when the trans is cold, I have had zero issues shifting.

I have recently discovered some interesting information regarding the Magnum XL synchros during my transmission rebuild. I had issues shifting into second gear last year so I decided to drop the transmission and see what was wrong. Checked clutch and it was good so I decided to tear into the transmission. I discovered that I had two broken fork pads and the synchros for 2nd and 3rd did not look great either. I decided to upgrade all of the internals. Replaced the stock plastic fork pads with bronze, replaced the 2nd gear blocker ring with a new CF one, replaced the 3,4,5,6,R blocker rings with hybrid CF/Bronze, and replaced the synchro assembly for 1-2 and 3-4. I didn't want to get into this thing again and figured doing all this now was cheap insurance.

After I received the new 1-2 and 3-4 synchronizer assemblies they looked different than the ones I was replacing so I decided to call Tremec and see why. They told me I had the wrong part numbers. After calling all over the country to Elite Tremec distributors I found out that none of them knew why the part numbers were different than the other Magnums and TR6060s. One shop even said they had installed the exact part numbers I was using in one of their Magnum XL rebuilds. I kept researching and ended up talking to Don at DDPerformance. He was very helpful.

Don was also stumped, but ended up calling an engineering contact he had at Tremec to find out why the synchronizers were different in my transmission. Come to find out it has to do specifically with the 2.66 first gear transmission that I have and the fact that these gear ratios are also used in the OEM TR6060 transmissions used on the GT500s and 2012+ Camaros.

Apparently the Camaro guys were complaining about hard shifting in cold weather so Tremec changed the synchro designs for only the 2.66 Magnum XL transmissions. The change allows for better shifting in cold temps, but it is not the best synchro design from a performance standpoint.

There are two types of synchronizers that Tremec uses in these transmissions. The first type is the symmetrical and the other they call advanced tooth. The original Magnum came with all gears using the symmetrical synchronizer, but there were complaints by the GT500 guys about shifting into second gear. They ended up going to the advanced tooth design for second gear and adding CF blocker rings. According to Tremec, the real advantage was moving to the CF blocker rings and not the advanced tooth design. This is the design that is used for the 2.97 Magnum XLs and most TR6060 transmissions except the ones using the 2.66 first gear. Those transmissions also have an advanced tooth design for 3rd gear.

I do not give a crap about cold weather so I have decided to change out my 2nd and 3rd gear (which were shot anyway) and change them to the symmetrical design like the 1st generation of Magnums. I was assured that this was the best way to go and that I would have one of the best 2.66 Magnum XLs out there with this setup. We shall see.

To summarize (Synchronizer type, blocker ring material):

First Gen Magnum:
1- Symmetrical, Bronze
2- Symmetrical, Bronze
3- Symmetrical, Bronze
4- Symmetrical, Bronze

Second Gen Magnum:
1- Symmetrical, Bronze
2- Advanced, CF
3- Symmetrical, Bronze
4- Symmetrical, Bronze

Magnum XL (2.97 first):
1- Symmetrical, Bronze
2- Advanced, CF
3- Symmetrical, Bronze
4- Symmetrical, Bronze

Magnum XL (2.66 first):
1- Symmetrical, Bronze
2- Advanced, CF
3- Advanced, Bronze
4- Symmetrical, Bronze

My new setup with Magnum XL (2.66 first):
1- Symmetrical, Bronze
2- Symmetrical, CF
3- Symmetrical, Hybrid (CF/Bronze)
4- Symmetrical, Hybrid (CF/Bronze)

2.66 first gear is way too tall in my opinion. Even the 2.97 was too tall in my Bullitt with 3.73 rear gears. But switching to 4.10 gears to improve 1st would have limited me on the top end in the 1/4 mile.

The T56 is an awesome trans but the gearing sucks for drag racing.

I really like the 2.66 with a 3.73 rear for primarily street driving with an occasional drag strip run. I make over 650 HP and this combination doesn't make my car blow the tires off through first and second. Granted the 2.97 would be better for the strip, but I think the 2.66 is a good compromise and is also a better gear set for road racing.

I love the 2.97 first gear (I run Skwerl's old T56) with my 3.55 rear end. Just about perfect with my TVS blower.

I am continuing to run the M1 ATF in the T56. The only issue I have noticed is that - in cold weather - it can be hard to hit second if shifting very fast before things are warmed up.

Once warmed, this thing shifts like buttah....and I love the Steeda T56 Magnum XL Tri-Ax shifter I added. It was a bit too stiff at first, but now I love the whole setup.

In my old tranny (TR3650), the Pennzoil Synchromesh was better than the M1 synthetic ATF, but in this tranny I am sticking with the M1 ATF unless I have any issues. So far, so good.

Hmm, I wonder if this will work on the Viper Spec D&D T56 transmission too.

Just read the link, looks like yes. How hard was the install?
