I now have all the rod clearances recorded, ranges .0023 - .0026, just where I want them, nice and loose. Started filing some rings to .025 and got 2 holes filled as of tonight. Hopefully I'll get to spend some time over Christmas getting this thing back together and back in my car, then to the dyno to finish tuning & the track too before the good weather goes away. It gets too hot here again pretty much by mid- April. Here's some more pics:

I picked up this rod vice since my previous build to make things a little easier this time around, works pretty good! Looks cool too...


Gotta do the Santa thing tomorrow night for my 8 year old, probably wont get much done the next couple days, which is cool I know my kids will be grown and gone before I know it!

I did actually make some progress today, 3 more pistons installed! I also went ahead and polished the crud off the pistons so they look brand new again, even though it will come back soon as I crank the motor it will look pretty on the stand, lol.




3 more to go, then the short block will be complete.

1/5 side clearance came out at .010, the same as my previous motor, as it should. This after another small battle with a burr, of course! At least I knew what to look for this time, since I ran into the same issue last time I assembled it. All rod bolts stretch range from .0059 - .0061 so far.

Okay here's where I'm at now, short block is complete! Heads on, cams degreed in, timing cover on, ready for the rear cover and oil pan next. It's been a busy couple days!


studs installed, this time very carefully measured, very stressful! 105mm deck to thread height, 2 turns out, at least .125 cushion.


cams degreed in @ 111.5, goal was 112, can't complain!

Ran into a snag with the timing cover, this block is the old style where the 3v timing cover hole is an issue, ended up taping a 1/8 npt plug, thanks Bruce!

Hopefully install the pan tomorrow and wrap everything up, then install soon as I can get an extra pair of hands!

I have the same set up, and run all 7 quarts through this way before cranking. Half while its on the stand then the rest just before cranking.

Okay quick update, I had a productive weekend, head cooling mods done, motor is primed and back in its home as of this morning! I was well on my way to finishing it today but my 3/8" drive torque wrench bit the dust all of a sudden, I was attempting to torque the steering shaft when I realized it was taking way more effort than it should, sure enough the POS locked up on me, I'll have to pick up a new one tomorrow. I got as far as I could without, I like to torque as many things down as possible, its too easy to strip all these aluminum components, I should have stock in heli-coils! Oh well I'll pick up a new 3/8" drive torque wrench tomorrow along with some e85, I estimate about 2 hours work left before I can crank it up. Basically install the blower bracket & belts on the front, then the next stressful test will be vacuuming down the cooling system, hopefully theres no leaks with the mods I did, then reinstall the intake and that's pretty much it. Probably should charge the battery again after sitting for two months. Here's some pics from the past couple days:

looking good man! putting the harness back on with all the other wires and components looked the same for me, it was almost overwhelming lol. but somehow or another it all goes back nice and neat, I want to do a wire tuck so bad, but not sure if I want to devote all that time yet...

I'd love to do a wire tuck but I don't have the time, nor the balls to attempt it! Way too many things that could wrong, and I know I don't have the patience either. I'm going to pressurize all my vacuum lines this time to check for leaks too, at least I'm going to attempt that, lol.

lol, yes sir that is correct, always good to have a few spares!

Jegs, about $40 shipped. I first tried to order from Summit but theirs were on back order, and also $60 so I canceled and went with Jegs, got it in a couple days an saved $20. How bout' that, every once in a while something actually works out! lol

Yep, I have worked in roofing and construction all my life. I now do Aluminum wall panel systems like you see on most of the car dealerships out there.

Ya never know, maybe later on, I just want to enjoy it for awhile first before tearing into it again. I hate seeing my car sit in the garage in pieces for months at a time.

Nope. Going to order the 07+ service manuals with the correct diagrams before I spend any more time screwing with it
