If anyone is still interested in this, I figured I would share what has transpired up until this point. This was where I left off

I ended up talking to Eric over at JPC before they left for the NMRA race at Bowling Green in the beginning of October about degreeing the exhaust cam. He ended up telling me the process to get them degreed and I got the exhaust cam all situated and degreed in after about 5 or 6 hours on Saturday the 3rd. On Sunday the 4th I came out side and started getting my baseline measurements. My neighbor came over and started asking me about the cams to see if I had it figured out since he helped me get the intake cam degreed. I guess I had thought I tightened everything down because I started turning the motor over but then after a while I realized that the cam had spun to the other side as the bolts on the phasers were now on the far right side of the phaser instead of the far left where I had set it. I stopped and put the cam back in the position as it was before and went to go get the measurement again but this time I was something like 12 degrees off of where it was before it spun. So I turned the motor over to make sure the timing marks all lined up and they all did, except for the left secondary chain so EVERYTHING had to come back off. I pulled everything off and retimed the motor and went to go degree my intake cam again. The motor then began to bind up but then it just stopped I turned it in the other direction and it began to bind up again and then it stopped.

In all honesty, I can't tell you the feeling of defeat I felt at that moment. I stopped what I was doing and put the bag back over the engine and walked inside. I just sat down and that was it. I was done for, lost all motivation for finishing my car for awhile. I spoke with JPC and they will finish the motor for me. I have to talk to them about bringing the entire car down and having them finish it all off for me. It would have been a cool feeling to have done it myself but I think I am over my head now. I hope I didn't bend a valve or crack a piston or something.

After owning the car for 2 years and 3 months a year and a 2 months, the car has been without an engine and 8 months prior to that it was barely driveable with CPS issues and VCT actuator issues and random misfires and phantom CEL's so I just want it done and over with to be honest. Thankfully I have the winter to get everything taken care of though.

Do you think the adjustable cam gears slipped? It's happened on other mod motors.

Forgive my ignorance, but I believe you are talking about the phasers correct? If so, I don't believe so as the phasers were gutted and replaced with an aluminum plate to take their place.

Well that blows. Sorry man.

Man that is rough. Looks like you were very through, so I wonder what went wrong.

Thank you gents, I would tackle this myself, but as 95ragtop said I wonder what went wrong. JPC should be taking a look at it whenever I can get it down to them and whenever they have the availability to do so.

I'm just going by what I'm seeing. It looks like the phasers were replaced or modified with adjustable cam gears. These things never work reliably. The only reliable way to degree a 4.6 is with the TFS crank gears. I wonder if they work with the 5.0? Even if they did both intake and exhaust would have to be tied together.

Oh ok I see what you mean now, yes they were replaced with the adjustable cam gears. AI followed the procedure as per JPC when they degree their cams so I am assuming that everything works the same. As for the TFS crank gear, I did recall reading from Modular Head shop if I am remembering correctly that the TFS crank gear doesn't work with the coyote unless you modify it in some way.

Stupid question here. Was the tdc stopper plug removed? I can't remember the technical name but it's something that fits in the spark plug hole and has an adjustable stop for marking tdc. Is there any chance that it is what's binding the motor?

Yep, that was the first thing I checked. I went back into the tool box and it was in the drawer right where I left it after I found TDC. That is what I thought happened after the motor stopped rotating.

Sean, I hope all works out. I know for a fact that JPC will take care of you. I had Eric and Justin do mine because I feared the same fate. It's a lot of money invested, and I was scared to death of this exact situation. You will forget all about it when you are ripping gears in that bitch when it's done.

I've learned over the years, some jobs I can tackle, some I cannot.

Not because I think I don't have the ability, I don't have the knowledge, experience and tools.

Good luck - I'm sure JPC will get your squared away.

Good luck, pulling for you and the car!

Well that sucks but it will be a relief to have it back running again.

Thanks guys, I have a bit of a ways to go but I'm excited for spring to get here and get the car back on the road again!

For sure, I was inclined to do the same thing but I didn't think I would have had the money to get this done at the time. They are pretty good folks and are one of the best shops in the country so i know that they will be able to fix my dumpster fire of a car.

For sure, from now on I am sticking with stickers and bolt on things. The degreeing of cams was WAY over my paygrade so I will not be attempting to do that again.

Sorry to see this man, I wouldn't think anything could have got much damage just from turning it over by hand on the stand though. I'm sure they'll figure it out and most likely will be something super simple you're just over looking right now.

Sometimes smarter to let the experts at it. I just did my Subaru timing belt few weekends ago, and when I slipped and spun both drivers side cams my stomach sunk. I had to take a break because my first reaction when finding resistance trying to line it back up was "oh sh** that's valve to piston or valve to valve" but it was the compression of the valve springs, guess TDC on these is mid valve opening on driver side

being new to the forum is great coz of all these old threads that i don't have to wait on to see how builds turned out. it was cool to read thru cam's engine swap into his bullitt all in 1 sitting. same for josh's turbo build. weatherman's build was something else too. hate to see this 1 turn out like it did.
