Dam race cars are always fussy about something. LOl

Nah, my car is way too slow to be a race car lol

Kyle it has been awhile since I dropped by your thread. Christmas family Mustang pics look great. Congratulations on getting the cage certified. New steering wheel is way cool and good luck resolving the lock up and belt eating.

Thanks Scott! The new steering wheel is a bit smaller than the OEM, it takes a little getting used to, also you can feel all the bumps in the road a lot more sensitive somehow. I ran over a couple reflectors in the road this afternoon while changing lanes and was like what the hell was that! Felt like I hit something.

I resolved the belt getting eaten issue. Ended up deleting 3 more idler pulleys, basically ended up with a 48" belt routed like this:

ZF55KMOl.jpg

I went for about a 5 mile test drive and the belt stayed on. Checked everything real close and didn't see any obvious signs of unusual wear or other issue so hopefully it stays fixed. I suspect the issue was related to the AC delete bracket and pulley I was running before, in any case it's gone now along with 2 other pulleys and all seems good. Now to address the damn tranny..

And here we go again!! FB wanted me to send the convertor back first, just to make 100% sure there's still not an issue with that before I send the whole tranny back. Well I am getting quicker with all the practice, only took me about an hour to get it out this time..

Don't they test the converter before they send it out?

I would hope so but you just never know for sure, heck they didn't even paint it this time so I know they were in a hurry, anything is possible. I wouldn't be surprised at all of it was bad either since there was some nice glitter in the fluid again when I drained it before shipping. FB sends the convertors out to a third party, they don't do them in house. Last time it came in box labeled "TCS - Torque Convertor Store" out of Arizona. Not sure if that's who makes them or not though. I am glad I have an FB tranny and convertor, at the moment, otherwise there would be a ton of finger pointing. One thing is for sure, I never should have sent it back to be loosened while my motor was out, everything worked perfectly before that.

I spoke with FB again today, Fred wants me to go ahead and send the whole tranny back so he can go through everything and make sure it's 100% right and also freshen it up while he's in there. At least when I get it back it will be brand new again. In the meantime I went ahead and prepped it for transport back to NY after work today. After draining as much fluid as possible I bolted the wooden ends on and loaded it back into the barrel. For some reason sending my tranny cross country in a barrel is kind of funny to me lol.

Fred promised to make my job a priority and get it in and out ASAP, we shall see. In any case after I get it back and installed I will essentially have a brand new motor and brand new tranny so 2018 will be a great year for sure!

Tranny shipped out on the 4th, should arrive at FB on the 8th, as long as the frigin' blizzard doesn't slow it down lol. In the meantime I finally did a little project that I've wanted to do for a while, finally installed NHRA legal 3" wheel studs on the front end. I was going to simply order the studs and press them in and out of my hubs but by the time you buy the stud kit and two spindle nuts you'd be in nearly $150, for another $100 I got the whole FRPP hub assembly with the ARP 3" studs pre-installed and new bearings, etc.

Here's a few pics, no mind bending tech or anything just a few pics:

One note I'll mention the spindle nuts are disposable, where you're only supposed to use them once then if you ever need to loosen them they're considered junk. I was aware of this going into the job but was not aware that Ford recently changed the design of the nuts. I searched all over trying to find the original type thinking the new style was wrong, but it's not. Original on right, new style on left. Torque to 221 lb ft for 07 and earlier cars. 08 and up I think it's 250 lb ft.

That's what I did with mine this summer. When I got the new nuts they were the older ones on your right.

Well verdict is in, FB tore down my tranny today and found the input shaft was bent, and displaced the bronze pump bushing and lock up seals, resulting in all the lock up pressure bleeding out, that and the pump was tore up pretty badly too. We think this probably happened during my previous engine failure last year when the block cracked so bad it looked like #6 - 8 cylinders were ready to detach from the rest of the motor. So a new input shaft, front drum and pump are going in, as well as freshening up the rest of the tranny. The torque convertor is getting redone again also, and upgrading to an improved design bottom plate. If all goes well everything should ship back out to me this week yet, wow that sure would be nice! In any case hats off to FB for jumping right on it when they received my tranny yesterday. Heck he said they're still trying to recover from the bomb cyclone storm thing that hit them last week, said they had a hell of a time just trying to get the drum off the truck when it arrived due to all the snow!

Wow that must have been some kind of (what ever) that did that kind of damage to the block and the trans. That's some good customer service to get it knocked out that quick.

Detonation was the verdict on that failure, took out both my engine and tranny! Holy shit! Never would have thought that was possible at my power level..

Do the spindle nuts have TTY threads? I didn't know they were considered disposable.

I have no idea why they can only be used once, maybe it's something to do with that. I know once you torque them to spec at 221 lb ft if you touch them again they're done.

My transmission finally shipped out on Friday, there was a delay getting the new billet input shaft but it should arrive on Wednesday next week. I was previously planning to go to the track tomorrow for run day Sunday, but that of course will not be happening now. In any case I was able to knock out another project while my car is up in the air that I've been wanting to do for a while, upgrade my fuel feed line from -8an to -10an. That -10an is one big ass line! Here's a pic right next to the -8an return.

I'm just waiting for the fitting that connects to the top of my Fore hat and the -10an line. I eyeballed the old fitting and it "looked" like -8an where it screwed into the hat, of course when I went to install the new fitting it turned out the opening is -10an, which is great but I had to order another fitting b/c I was too lazy to actually pull the old one before I ordered the new one! It was freaking cold that night though lol.

needless to say the new valve seats didn't arrive this week, supposedly they'll be here Monday then I'll get my heads back shortly thereafter. Back to the waiting game.
Nice build, we definitely should get together, who did your coatings

Thanks, The pistons were coated in house by Diamond, they were custom ordered that way. I hope to have my car back together this weekend, I'd be down to meet up sometime for sure.

Definitely looks like they did a good job I have the same brand pistons but had calico coat mine, heard they where the best in the business, when I got them back i did clean up the edges a little had some sharp edges, if you need a hand putting your car together don't hesitate to ask

Cool thanks for the offer! I've had it apart and back together so many times now it's not even funny, but that's allowed me to get pretty good at it lol. I've also made some tools along the way that help too, i.e. this cradle I made that holds my transmission while raising or lowering, since the pan on my 4r70 has a nasty bump in the bottom of the pan that make it nearly impossible to balance on a jack otherwise, at least not by myself. But again thanks for the offer, I appreciate that for sure.

It's nothing hi-tech or fancy but makes a world of difference when working by yourself

Looks like a handy piece of tool, I know it' hard to work with out the right tools, if you need any tools that you might come across needing I have a ton of stuff I've collected in the last 20 years, I probably have 70k worth, just let me know and your more than welcome to borrow it, I spent around 700 on ac tools last month just to make my own custom ac lines after all these guys pissed me off with there crappy work, it seems like nobody cares anymore to offer quality work and if they do they sure are not around here
