Wouldn't give up my Hurst after driving everything... MGW, Pro5.0, Steeda... the Hurst just fits me.

I have had the hurst for ages. I always struggle with 2-3 at the track - especially NA as Im running round to 6850rpm. Im looking at the MGW, Ill check out the pro 5 too.

(I even have the CHE brace, better but not good enough)

Its only partly the shifter's fault. Swap in some stiffer motor mounts and possible a CHE K member brace with torque limiters and you will see a 100% improvement in shifting.

The problem is the shifters are remote mounted to the body and not directly connected to the transmissions like the previous generation mustangs. They tried to rectify it with the GT500 by adding a second support arm which helped but did not cure the issue.

aha, good feedback, much appreciated!

I have the CHE brace and with tweaking this improved shifting. I also have some billet/bullit(!) motor mounts but not yet fitted them. Ill do that and try them before I throw the baby out with the bathwater and buy a new shifter. My stock motor mounts have seen 65k miles now and a lot of track action

Thanks:beerchug2:

I haven't met one person who likes the hurst shifter for slammin gears, most of the people who have them bought them for looks alone

Thats true on me, I bought it for looks but also given the name I thought it would be a good power shifter. Ive spent double the purchase price on other mods to get the damn thing working. The motor mounts I have to yet to fit are its last chance:tdown:

I like my Hurst, but I haven't tried any other ones. The CHE brace with torque limiters tightened everything up, I still find the 2-3 shift tricky.

So tricky, actually, that I was practicing my 2-3 shift last Sunday. I put in my CHE brace 2 weekends ago and it hasn't stopped raining in Miami since. I was able to find some dry time last Sunday, and I took her out to try out the brace.

Well, my car is at the shop right now getting the T3650 replaced, because I blew up my 3rd gear synchro with my "find it or grind it" philosophy. At least I get to put my aluminum flywheel in.........

I may try upgrading the motor mounts didn't think of that, good catch...
I have to pull them out for the Kooks install anyway.

Now that I have a few days of driving with it, I feel I'm getting alittle better with the hurst. maybe I will give it some more time before I pull it out.

Tony, don't feel bad this is only my personal feelings with the hurst nothing else. I got a good deal on it so not too bad

i hated the hurst, it was cool for a couple days but IMO its a piece of crap and i couldn't really see how it would be an upgrade over stock. It was nice for regular driving but as soon as you would romp on it... its a no go.

i would never recommend it to someone else, i can shift WAY faster and more consistent with the stocker... why downgrade? but hey everyone's different.

My hurst is the comp plus with the billet body. I absolutely love it. Never missed a shift. I road course mine often, so I'm going through the gears quite a bit more often than the strip jockeys :) Notchy yes, but it slides into gear real nice. It totally goes with the muscle car feel (looks too). You gotta muscle it into gear :)

How the hell do you miss 1-2??? Third is like butter. Just push forward at a slight angle. You guys aren't actually tyring to do the pattern are you? Ram that bitch in there. That's what the stops are 4.

I kinda doubt it, but maybe it has to do with the fact mines the comp plus? I bought it cause it was billet for about 30 bucks more. I've never owned a hurst before, but I can attest that my shifts are shorter and feel much more precise over stock. It's loud too. It reminds you that every shift is important. lol

As nice and bullet proof as the mgw looks..I'm sorry, but if I had 400 bucks for a shifter , I don't think I would have bought a mustang in the first place. I spent my leftover cash on more goodies. If you wanna hurst, try it, and sell it if you don't like it. Someone will pick it up.

what the stops are 4.

Then why did I just pay $600 for a gently used T3650 to replace the one which almost exploded when I tried power-shifting into 3rd at 6,500 rpm last Sunday?

If you wanna say I'm a lousy driver; so be it. I don't care; I know I can drive. When you play hard, you sometimes break shit; but if you pop the clutch too early and you haven't put the gear all the way in and you're redlining at WOT, those stoppers aren't doing a damn thing for you.

So..you answered your own question. Nothing to do with the shifter, but the shifter-er. lol. I wasn't pointing any fingers in my post, but damn. Sounds like you are still coming down from blowin' up your cogbox.

Naw, I'm not really that pissed about it. I bought my car used with 36K on it, and I've put another 14K on it; pretty much beating the shit out of it the whole time. I really can't complain. Now I got a new tranny (well, with 800 miles on it) that I can put through hell. I got a great deal on the tranny, and I have an excuse to put my flywheel in, so it's all good. Trust me: It's not the first or last time I blow a tranny on a Stang. ;)

My point was on your comment about the stoppers. To assume that the stoppers will save your ass if you miss a shift is wrong; regardless of what shifter you're using.

I am having the same problem goinf from 2-3 with my hurst comp. It feels like the handle is about to break off and its just butter! It seems like when i shift into 3rd, the handle(the bottom piece) is just going to crack before it ever goes into the gear. How can i fix this? Its embarassing to miss 3rd when racing, then nobody believes you the shifter is known for that problem. lol

No, I wasn't saying or implying that the stoppers will save you from missing or possibly worse. I was suggesting if people who have trouble with third who might actually be doing the "H" pattern do a "/" motion when shifting in a hurry. When shifting into third, I push forward at slight angle as quick as possible.
The arm smacks the stopper and we are still movin. (fast)

So, were are on the same page, stoppers keep/help you from over extending the shift and are NOT a guard against powershifting at 6500 RPMs. lol.

BolivianGimp:
it's hard to say . "Arm feels like it's about to break off??" Is it going to far forward? Make sure your stoppers are adjusted right. All I did was put the trans in third gear and threaded the stud up to the shift lever and tightened up the jam nut. (make sure you aren't pushing the shifter arm back any) This obviously goes for the other stud too. If that's not your issue, make sure your bolts are tight and the shift arm is on the correct side (just a blind guess). Check all hardware underneath as well. Sounds generic, I know, but there's not all that much to a shifter intall.

FOR THOSE WHO WANNA BUY THIS SHIFTER READ ON!!!!!
I had to install my shifter twice because the instructions don't tell you to thread the stopper studs in BEFORE you install the shifter in the car. Otherwise, you may not be able to thread them in because the trans tunnel won't give you the angle needed to get the studs started into the shifter base.
Gotta love aftermarket parts and with aftermarket instructions.
