Well this isn't 4.6 talk, but it is tech, hopefully.. My buddy wasted (and I will say that honestly) about 17K to rebuild and paint his car. Now he has a 347 Stroker with a rebuilt C4 and whatever rear end came on a 1966 inline 6. :thud: well, after a year of having no car due to the people he had that were building it fucked him over (in which I learned never let anyone you don't fully trust touch your car) he finally got it back about three weeks ago, and it still smokes like a mother fucker. What could be causing this??

Oh, and not sure if this has anything to do with that problem, but FWIW, when he first went to go see the new motor, the guy told him to hear his new motor and turn it on, the car was turned on with no oil..... :eek:hsnap:

That's what I'm thinking burning oil, but why is the question. he has a custom grind cam and it's a high compression motor, but the last few times we checked oil level has been fine. I'm at a loss with that vehicle.. and it's been smoking since the new motor went in. which is a while back, but it's not something that just happened after months of having it running fine.

Could be lots of things. But I'd bet the rings are not seated properly.

very vague description... is it a constant stream of smoke? what color is the smoke? what does it smell like?

What kind of oil is being run in it? I've found that on a built motors its a good idea to run thicker oil because the tolerances are looser.

Valve guides, valve seals, rings, etc. If it's a 5.0 based engine, the intake gaskets are somewhat notorious for not sealing properly and allowing oil to be sucked up by the intake ports. Had it happen on two different Fox cars I owned.

Starting the car with no oil is not good...

Way too many variables. IE; White smoke? Trans fluid, or water vapor, Black smoke? too rich [fuel] Blue smoke? Oil! which can be due to a multitude of problems. Usually due to a ring, or valve problem. Also over filling the pan will cause profound and excessive oil burning.

That's what we thought too, but we won't have time to look at it til the weekend.

He's running a heavy oil, just not sure what brand or if it's synthetic or not. and it's a constant stream of white/grey smoke. haven't smelled it up close, but when I was driving behind him, I though I was having a cigarette..

motor used to be a 289. but if it's to that extent of it being the valve guides, I'm not gonna touch it, I'll just tell him to take it back to the guy who built it.

What first comes to my mind ... rings, bad valve guides or bad valve seals.

+1. and also, taking it back to him is the problem, but we don't wanna touch much because when it gets back to him, he could easily be a dick and say it was our fault.

You check the anti-freeze?

Nope. not yet.

347s are known to smoke. I don't really know if it's normal without seeing it.

very true they smoke because the stroke is so long that the oil control ringlands are in the wristpin area.

At best, we're hoping it's a just a characteristic of the car. I would ask him, but unlike being me being a forum fiend, he didn't do his research at all..

Do a leakdown test. It will tell you whether it's the rings, the valves, or the head gasket.
