I am running mobil 1 5-20 in my car. Why do you say that is no good for turbos?

the guy who built my turbo builds alot of turbos for race cars, that was what he told me, since he has had people switch to VR1 he has seen alot less problems with turbos, and i asked him about mobile1 specificly because i was thinking about using it.....he told me "mobile 1 was the worst oil i could run in a turbo". i have been using VR1 for awhile now becuase it has a high zinc content which is suppose to be real good for bearings!

That's interesting info about the turbos from the guy that rebuilds them. I'm sure dealing with them on a daily basis that he probably can tell you what the cause of the failure is and how to prevent it. Just out of curiousity, how much was it for a turbo rebuild?

yeah, love this guy.....everytime i talk to him he spends 15-20 minutes on the phone with me just talking and giving me more info than i even ask for!

his website is currently under contruction but should be up soon, hes going to have a section all about different oil selections he has used over the years.

This topic sparked my interest and I have been reading up about how a lot of newer oils dont have zinc anymore due to damaging effects on cats. I have found a ZDDP additive that apparently adds this missing zinc back into whatever oil you use to add more lubrication to the bearing surfaces. Might have to try VR1 or just adding ZDDP to my current RP

I use VR1 as well and it is a great oil. I have never had any issues with my turbo running it. I also run a -3 feed and -10 drain with no restrictor and have no issues with smoking whatsoever, but I run a Bullseye turbo unlike most people on this board. Also, I wouldn't necessarily say 10-30 is the thickest oil to run in a mod motor. That really depends on your clearances when building your motor. However, most people who have built motors will have factory spec clearances and should stick to 10-30 or 10-40 at most.

200 mile UPDATE:

car is running strong.

TURBO REBUILD AND SMOKING ISSUES:new seals in the turbo seemed to be the fix for the oil smoke screen i was leaving everywhere, currently running #3 with no restrictor and #12 drain! did about 5 heat cycles of just letting the car get to temp, then letting it cool down, then 100 miles of just taking it easy....letting it get to 1-2 PSI before backing off.

COOLANT TEMPS: are 180-185 on average @ cruising speeds....creeps up to 200 in redlight traffic with the A/C on.....if i get stuck really long in the florida heat, it will creep to 220....but soon as i get it rolling again it comes right down.

OIL TEMPS: are 150-155 on average @ cruising speeds.....hits 180 @ WOT

OIL PRESSURES: 80-90 at start up, 70 at cruising speeds and 25 at fully warm idle

A/F: is a good 11.3-11.5 at WOT

TR6060: shifts great and love the KR shifter, gearing and such seem perfect with the 3:55's i have

i havnt taken past 10 PSI yet, the tires are having a real hard time as it is.

i think i need to back the meth nozzle down atleast one size, i went thru almost 1.5 gallons on a 80 mile spirited cruise.....seems like alot!

going tuesday to the dyno , also getting my tutorial on using the SCT software!
