2v,3v,4v Blocks

What's the differences in the blocks? I know the heads are different, but I know One Eyed Willy used 2v studs because they were cheaper and they fit perfect? I'm not sure what changes might need to be made, but I've found some pretty good priced 2/4v and was wondering about the differences?

Not to be negative but hopefully the tolerances are the same being that 05 ups are aluminum. Don't know if I'd take that chance.

its the same block altogether.

Only the 03/04 cobra's were made with steel. Everything else is aluminum with hypertec piston's

So what would be different about just bolting a set of our 3v heads up to it? I'm finding SB's with forged assemblies in them for cheaper and was wondering about using one and the differences there would be?

the heads should just bolt to it but..... your gonna need everything else thats 05+ to go with it.

I would just get a block from the year your car is. Like mine is a 06block and my car is an 05

My understanding is that the pistons are notched differently for 2V & 3V engines.

The blocks will work fine....Like Joe said, the pistons are notched different for the valves.....

All 2V 96-04 blocks are cast iron.
All 03-04 Cobra blocks are cast iron and nearly identical to the 2V blocks.
All 96-01 4V's are aluminum
All 03-04 Mach 4V's are aluminum
All 05-09 3V mustang blocks are aluminum

Aluminum blocks are roughly 80lbs lighter than cast iron.

2V pistons are notched
4V pistons aren't

There are a couple different bearing kits for the different blocks, so yes, tolerances are different. The 05-up blocks are cast different with different motor mount configurations. Aside from the motor mount casting differences, they'll all interchange with minor modifications (speaking blocks only).

Seems to me that the deck heights on a 2V vs. 3V block were different, or do I need to lay off the alcohol again?

The deck heights are the same. You can use an older block, but you have to get the adapter plates for the motor mounts. Also I've seen people post that the front of the older blocks need to be drilled for the VCT the 3v heads have. I don't know for sure as I've not seen where they need to be drilled, but I've seen more then one person say this.

the only deck height diffence is 4.6 to 5.4. they call these modular motors for a reason. damn near all of them are the same configuration and you can interchange heads on them with little to no effort. 5.4 heads fit a 4.6 and the other way around. where people run into trouble are the intakes and timing covers. they are 2v,4v and 3v specific and 4.6-5.4 specific.

possibly but you would need to check the piston to valve clearance first
