ive been running a 93 oct tune on my sct xcal3 (can tune), but last week i switched back to the 87 oct, and i was wondering if any of yall knew exactly how moch power i lost doing that switch, if any. it feels like i lost some, but it could just be mental. also, is there much difference in mpg's? my driving habits arent consistent enough to tell on this one. thanks

u didn't loose any power. The car will run better with the tuned 93 octane. Less detonation and less chance of bad fuel. The can tunes are junk anyways. Should have a local dyno tune shop who knows how to tune with SCT play with it. A lot of canned tunes from SCT run really fat and can hurt your car in the long run.

Now a un-tuned mustang running 93 is useless. Will just burn it faster. It does nothing

Unless you have some heavy mods, shouldn't worry. If I was you, keep it 93, only reason i can see anyone running 87 is the price of fuel but with these cars, gotta make exceptions.

canned SCT tune..

Bama SCT tune :thumb:

putting it to 87 will cost you exactly five horsepower. not four. not six. but five.

Lol, j/k man. it's not much difference, unless you have it on fuel economy. Even then if you decide to put it on fuel economy, do not use 93. that's a massive waste of money.

I used to like to run the 87 octane tune on longer trips; it got better fuel milage and overall cost less. That's of course using cruise control and not flooring it all the time.

But yeah, for performance, 93 is the way to go.

Do the math, I did, the difference between a tank full of 87 and 93 comes to around 1 dollar, thats considering 15 gallons of gas at a difference of 10 cent a gallon, to me, it's worth it, go ahead and run the 93 tune

You also have to take into consideration how often you have to fill it up. Its really not a dollar difference if you have to fill it up with 93 twice before filling up with 87 once. If your only running a few basic mods, stick with 87 and a 87 tune. You should really only move up the chain when running some serious stuff. The couple extra horsepower isnt' worth the extra of hundreds of dollars on extra fuel.

Is 90 any better from 87???? or should i go for 93. I don't have any mods at all.

WOW, that sucks, here in Md, Baltimore area 87 is around 2.58 and 93 is 2.69, 87 is mid grade isn't it? I don't pay much attention to it as I us Super.

89 is midgrade, or 91 depending on your area. that's pretty cheap for MD, in South Texas I just put a few gallons in at $2.79, which isn't bad but I enjoyed paying $2.00 all the time for premium. haha.

Octane is strictly a measure of resistance to detonation. Our engines were designed to run on 87 octane. Unless you are tuned to run a different octane than 87 then there will be a loss in power from using a higher grade of gasoline. However the difference is minimal and probably not measureable on a Dyno. This is because there is less energy in 93 octane gas than there is in 87. The reason we gain power from tuning is becasue spark is advanced due to the additional knock resistance of the higher grade of fuel. The spark can be advanced enough in the combustion process that it overcomes the decreased energy in the fuel resulting in a net gain in power.

You should not see any difference in fuel economy from one grade fo fuel to the next unless the tune is changed as well. Any percieved difference is Placebo Effect .

Regarding price-

Every $0.10 increase in gas price results in $1.60 increase in the price of a full tank(16 gal.) of gas.

the average driver travels about 15000 miles per year. Assuming 19.5mpg(my average) and a $0.20 price difference between 87 and 93, the additional cost is about $160 extra per year.

Assuming a person were to purchase 16 gallons of fuel at a price of $2.50/gal once a week for a year: $2080
Assuming a person were to purchase 16 gallons of fuel at a price of $2.60/gal once a week for a year: $2163.2
Assuming a person were to purchase 16 gallons of fuel at a price of $2.70/gal once a week for a year: $2246.4

exactly what I said earlier.
